Quentin Tarantino is an unparalleled director in Hollywood. We know his love for films and also his hatred of a particular kind of films – those made by marvel studios, something Martin Scorsese echoes. But now he has stepped in to add that the actors who star in such films are not movie stars either. Check out his ballistic words below!
Quentin Tarantino has harsh words for Marvel Studios actors
Director Quentin Tarantino’s Marvel hatred is well known. Recently, he was asked if he would ever direct a Marvel movie, and the director replied that he wouldn’t because he’s “not a laborand he is “not looking for a job”.
Now, in an interview with Variety, the director talked about the “wonder-ization of Hollywood” and how MCU actors aren’t movie stars. He said:
“Part of the Marvel-ization of Hollywood is…you have all these actors who rose to fame playing these characters. But they are not movie stars. Right? Captain America is the star. Or Thor is the star. I mean, I’m not the first person to say that. I think that’s been said a million times… but it’s like, you know, it’s these franchise characters that become a star.
Quentin Tarantino further stated that what irks him about Marvel movies is the fact that they’re the only kind of movies “that feel like they’re done.” He explained:
“My only ax to grind against them is that they are the only things that seem to have been made. And those are the only things that seem to generate any kind of excitement among a fanbase or even the studio making them… And that’s just the fact that they’re the entire representation of this era of cinema right now . There really isn’t room for anything else. That’s my problem.”
Is there a hidden meaning behind his harsh words
In the interview, Quentin Tarantino said he doesn’t hate Marvel. He said:
“Look, I used to collect Marvel comics like crazy when I was a kid. There’s an aspect that if these movies came out when I was in my twenties, I would be totally happy and I would totally love them. I mean, they wouldn’t be the only movies to be made. They would be these films among other films. But, you know, I’m almost 60, so yeah. No, I’m not as excited about them.
As mentioned in the quote above, his main focus to grind with Marvel is that they apparently created a monopoly. In this monopoly, other types of films are not really flourishing. And that’s true. Marvel movies make millions. But mid-budget movies, like romantic comedies, have all but disappeared or been relegated to streaming services.
The race for IPs and the creation of a cinematic universe was indeed launched by Marvel. And everyone also participated in this race because it is apparently the only thing that attracts the public at the moment. But not everyone agrees with Quentin Tarantino’s comments.
Shang-Chi and the Ten Rings star Simu Liu came to Marvel’s defense and said Tarantino couldn’t point his nose at him. The MCU star said Marvel’s commitment to diversity gave him the chance to helm a $400 million movie. He tweeted:
If the only gatekeepers to movie stardom were Tarantino and Scorsese, I would never have had the opportunity to direct a $400 million+ movie.
I am in awe of their cinematic genius. They are transcendent authors. But they can’t point their noses at me or anyone.
