The Wall Street Journal reports that Avatar: The Way of the Water will hit Chinese theaters on December 16, the same day it opens in North America and other territories. The way of the water is the first Disney blockbuster to open in China in three years.
The first entry into the Avatar The series was a hit in China, grossing $261.8 million. Prior to the film’s release in 2009, IMAX had 14 screens in China, but now has over 800, with 200 more on the way.
In other Pandora related news, Avatar: The Way of the Water received a PG-13 rating by the Motion Picture Association Of America. The rating is the result of “sequences of strong violence and intense action, partial nudity and foul language”.
The latest trailer for Avatar: The Way of the Water debuted Sunday night, announcing that tickets for the film are now on sale. The way of the water is one of James Cameron’s longest films to date, running approximately 3 hours and 10 minutes.
“Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri and their children), the troubles that follow them, the lengths that they went to protect each other, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure,” according to Disney’s official synopsis for the film.
Directed by James Cameron from a script he co-wrote with Josh Friedman, The Way of Water stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Cliff Curtis, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement, Giovanni Ribisi and Kate Winslet.
