star wars is considered one of the most significant contributions to the world of pop culture. The iconic franchise started by George Lucas has spanned a vast universe. It has several movies, series, animation projects and games under its banner. But the franchise suffered a massive backlash after the release of the Continuation Trilogy. Interestingly, despite the strong criticism, The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson has expressed his thoughts on returning to the franchise.
The sequel trilogy saga starring Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Oscar Issac could not replicate past reception and drew intense backlash from die-hard fans. Fans were also annoyed with Disney because the whole fiasco happened after the Lucasfilm acquisition. But it looks like the franchise has started to regain popularity after the success of their multiple Disney+ projects.

Rian Johnson on his return to the world of Star Wars
Rian Johnson has been hired by the Kathleen Kennedy Cartel to direct the second film in the sequel trilogy, Star Wars: The Last Jedi. While critics praised the film, audiences were largely divided. He also had to deal with a lot of negative receptions from everywhere. But following this, JJ Abrams returned for the final film in the trilogy titled The Rise of Skywalker which faced a disastrous reaction from everywhere.
Although Rian Johnson’s film has largely divided the star wars fandom, it was reported that the director would return with his own trilogy. He remarked that the trilogy would explore new areas of the franchise without having any connection to previous stories. The shot was considered dead by many as the director focused his vision on the Knives out franchise. But surprisingly, the ideas are still active.
Recently, during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Rian Johnson was asked if he was willing to return to any Lucasfilm series given their popularity after projects like Andor. In response, the 48-year-old said he was up for any Star Wars project given to him.
“I would do anything in Star Wars. And if I had an idea that excited me, that worked better as a show than a movie, I would do it that way. Right now, we’re between filming the next Benoit Blanc’s film and the reflection on Poker Face. I continue to meet with Kathy [Kennedy] and have conversations. Who knows? Doing The Last Jedi was the best experience of my life, so I should be very lucky.
The director confirmed longstanding reports from him and President Kathleen Kennedy that he was ready to return to the world of Star Wars after his projects with Netflix ended. But it looks like it’s now more likely to join a series set in a galaxy far, far away instead of a full project.

Can Rian Johnson come back for a star wars series?
A long break has been taken by the space opera franchise following the release of the ninth film in the Skywalker saga. World of Jedi and the Sith mostly followed a wide variety of Disney+ series during this time and it turned out to be a very successful move. The Mandalorian featuring Pedro Pascal was widely praised by critics and audiences alike. Andor, the last project which has just been completed recently obtained the label of the best series in the Star Wars universe.

The series starring Diego Luna as Cassian Andor has proven to be a very successful outing and is also set to return for a second season with a release date yet to be announced. On the other hand, even The Mandalorian is set to return with the third season next year. Additionally, there are also reports of Ahsoka and The Acolyte series that will soon receive more updates. Given the repeated success of the shows, it is more likely that Glass Onion the director may return for a Disney+ project.
All Star Wars projects are streaming on Disney+ while The Mandalorian season 3 should be aired from February 2023.
