Henry Cavill’s return to the DCU was announced in the Black Adam post-credits scene. And later, via an Instagram post, the actor announced that he was officially back as a man of steel after an absence of almost 5 years. But why did it take him so long to put on the red and blue costume? And who brought him back? The Rock Dwayne Johnson has finally answered these questions.
Dwayne Johnson comments on Henry Cavill’s absence from the DCU
During an Instagram Live, Dwayne Johnson explained why Henry Cavill’s Superman was put on extended hiatus. He had scathing words about the studio not wanting him back. Johnson said:
“Ultimately, the studio wasn’t bringing Henry Cavill back. Inexplicably and inexcusably, but we weren’t going to take ‘no’ for an answer. Myself, my co-founder and president of Seven Bucks, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, our president of Seven Bucks. It took years to bring Henry Cavill back. And years of strategic conversations and we weren’t going to take no for an answer.
The Rock’s lyrics fit the various rumors that have been circulating for years that former DC Films president Walter Hamada has reached an impasse with Henry Cavill. DC fandom has often speculated that Cavill was asking for a bigger sum or/and that he wanted there to be a Superman movie in development. It’s theorized that he didn’t want to appear just for cameos and that’s probably why we saw a headless Superman in Shazam.
But BM probably saw no value in it. But The Rock clearly felt there was no way to build a DCU without Superman. Still, one has to wonder why he was so adamant about bringing Henry Cavill back, Johnson said:
“For us, there is no way, no viable, logical way to try to build the DC Universe without the most powerful force and the greatest superhero of all time sitting on the sidelines. is impossible to do. You can diagram Venn commercially 90 times, but it all comes down to “Where’s Superman”? You have to have Superman in the mix.
Rock’s Favorite Superman
In the same live, Dwayne Johnson talked about his favorite Man of Steel. And he said that Henry Cavill big blue scout was his favorite version of the iconic hero. In his words:
“And there was no other Superman, by the way, to bring back. Henry Cavill is the Superman of our generation and, in my opinion, the greatest Superman. And I say that respectfully to the other actors, in especially Christopher Reeve. But the greatest Superman of all time. So again, bringing Henry back, we’re now building the DC Universe correctly, strategically, intelligently. Again, the hierarchy of power in the DC Universe changed.
It’s clear that Johnson has great respect for Henry Cavill and has insisted on not recasting the DCU’s Superman. It was thanks to his courage and tenacity in negotiations with WB that we finally got Henry’s Man of Steel back.
