The Hulk character was very popular with Marvel fans. Much appreciated is the complexity and similarity to the character of Dr Jekyll and Hyde of Hulk as he transitions from brilliant Dr Bruce Banner to a raging, out of control green monster. While Hulk was introduced to the screen long before with the 2003 Pontoon along with Eric Bana, it was Mark Ruffalo who brought the green monster to life as the Avenger.
However, in Avengers: Endgame, the character of the Hulk was transformed from a monster to a brilliant scientist with green skin and strong muscles. In a conversation with Joe Rogan, Robert Downey Jr. justifies the reason for the change as the former finds the Hulk change upsetting.

While Bruce Banner couldn’t transform into a big green monster and had to rely on Iron Man’s Hulkbuster to fight off the minions attacking Wakanda in Avengers: infinity war, the genius scientist somehow makes peace with his character merging the two to create a more sophisticated Hulk in Avengers: Endgame.
Like many who didn’t like the Hulk character in Avengers: EndgameJoe Rogan shared the opinion he expressed to Robert Downey Jr.
“I didn’t get the whole Smart Hulk thing,” rogan says. “I didn’t understand how he understood that. It wasn’t really… like… Hulk is supposed to be Hulk. He’s supposed to be the Quirk… It’s like someone you can control, one is the genius scientist…”
“Exactly,” accepts Robert Downey Jr.
“One is the beast”, Roger said.

Robert Downey Jr. in defense of Smart Hulk
Following Joe Rogan’s comments on the earth-shattering and sophisticated Hulk in Avengers: Endgame, Robert Downey Jr. has defended the decision as to why the Hulk character was nerfed despite all the love he received.
“But after so many times, and again, it’s the genius of the people breaking and shaping the stories there, Feige and his team, they’re saying, ‘It’s Hulk. And then he’s not the Hulk. It’s Hulk. It’s a big battle. Oh, he’s so conflicted. What if he could find himself in the middle? And then what corner did we paint ourselves by having it meet in the middle because if it doesn’t work you can’t go back to what it was, did you?

The sherlock holmes The actor explained how it was decided to have Bruce Banner meet in the middle with his other character, which could be a beacon for disaster.
Continuing, he said,
“Or you can go back to how it was… So I just think the real genius of the creative team at Marvel and the Russo Brothers who made the last ones, Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, is that they say, ‘We love to write. ourselves in a corner. We like that.’ Because then that activates all these “how do we get the juices out of purgatory” and then you get the next brilliant idea.
Also speaking about his return as Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr. mentioned how he was shut down after completing his role, which could indicate the actor may not be returning to the MCU.
Mark Ruffalo reprized his role as the Hulk in She-Hulk: Lawyer.
