On Thursday, The US Health and Human Services Department said as the coronavirus is rapidly increasing, the US has seen an increase of 1200% for monoclonal antibody treatments in the last month.

About 75% of the orders for monoclonal antibodies are from regions of the US that have low vaccination rates.

It has also been found that recently there is an increase in the number of doctors using the treatments, also known as mAbs, said HHS. Earlier in this year, the federal government had sent thousands of doses to states, but many refused to get vaccinated due to the complicated logistics of how doctors administer the treatments.
A spokesperson for HHS said, “based on two-week utilization we are encouraging sites to order as much as they think they’ll need. As of now, there are many patient courses available for existing and new sites”.

From July 1st to August 5th, more than two lakh three thousand patients have ordered the courses nationally. States such as Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, Tennessee, South, and North Carolina, have ordered nearly 81,000 patient courses. States in Region 6, which includes Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Louisiana, have ordered almost 77,000 patient courses.
On Thursday during a press briefing, a senior adviser of the White House Covid-19 response team, Dr. Marcella Nunez-Smith stated that more than 6 lakh people in the US have received monoclonal antibodies treatments since the start of the pandemic.
She said “Monoclonal antibodies work. They are safe. They are free. They help to save the people and there will be no shortage of beds because it helps to keep people out of the hospital ”
Nunez-Smith gave the examples of the two successful Arizona antibody treatments that a federal team set up recently as proof.

On Thursday the Governor of Florida Ron DeSantis said that a rapid response unit will be administering antibody treatments in Jacksonville and the Jacksonville program will be used as a model in other parts of the state.

A monoclonal antibody treatment is not as simple as swallowing a pill though various studies suggest monoclonals are very effective in preventing high-risk patients from developing severe Covid-19 symptoms. These lab-made antibodies need to be infused, so the hospitals should have dedicated staff and space to be able to carry out the right procedure for this treatment.
The emergency authorization for the monoclonal antibodies treatments are made by Regeneron, GlaxoSmithKline, and Eli Lilly and are available to patients of 12 years of age and older.
