COVID Booster Vaccine And When To Take It

However, Mayo Clinic doctors caution that just because a booster vaccination is awaiting FDA(U.S. Food and Drug Administration) clearance does not mean that everyone should get a third dosage anytime they think they need it. The timing of a booster is critical since it is intended to provide extended immune protection. It is not always preferable to act sooner, and these experts have additional worries.
Dr. Gregory Poland, an infectious diseases expert and chairman of Mayo Clinic’s Vaccine Research Group, says, “We’re absolutely aware of press stories that patients are going out on their own and receiving the third dosage.” “I would advise caution in this case. We don’t have a lot of information on this, and we want to do it in the most beneficial and risk-free way possible.”
These statements were also backed by the co-chair of the COVID-19 Vaccine Allocation and Distribution Work Group at the Mayo Clinic Dr. Melanie Swift.
She also says “Secondly, while we have an adequate vaccination supply to satisfy this current booster prescription,” Dr. Swift continues, “we don’t have an unlimited supply of the vaccine.” Boosters are expected for those who have previously been vaccinated, but vaccinations that will be approved for youngsters in the future months must also be anticipated, she says”.
Dr. Swift explains, “If people have a robust immune system and received their complete first series, they should be protected for at least eight months following that series, eliminating the need for an early booster.
“We’re in an uncommon scenario where, despite all the evidence, we can’t persuade a group of individuals to take the first dose,” Dr. Poland says. “Then there’s a group of folks who are going out on their own and obtaining third, fourth, and fifth dosages since we don’t have the data yet. We don’t know what the ramifications of that will be yet.”
