A replica of the Hollywood set was erected about three miles outside of Kanab. This Johnson Canyon movie set is maybe the largest

constructed in the Kanab area. It may still be visible from the road, but it is inaccessible due to its overall condition of degradation.

Dodge City Marshal Matt Dillon is the protagonist of this great adult Western. John Wayne refused the invitation, instead proposing James

Arness (who remained for its entire run). It first aired on radio (with William Conrad as Dillon) before moving to television in September

1955. Its popularity spawned a flood of imitators, but none could equal this masterpiece’s length (or consistency).

Gunsmoke, an American television western that ran for 20 seasons on CBS from 1955 to 1975, becoming the longest-running prime-time

television western in history. From 1957 through 1961, the series was the highest-rated show, and it maintained high ratings throughout its existence.

Miss Kitty Russell (Amanda Blake), proprietor of the Long Branch Saloon, which served as a bordello; Doc Adams (Milburn Stone), the

town’s expert physician; and Deputy Marshal Chester Goode (Dennis Weaver), Dillon’s devoted sidekick, were among the supporting characters. When Weaver departed the programme in 1964, Festus Haggen took his place (Ken Curtis).

Dillon and his pals spent the most of the episodes fighting robbers, thieves, and other perils that swept in from the plains.

The vast majority of clashes occurred as a consequence of an outsider invading the little, close-knit group and triggering some type of disturbance.

The show did, as the name implies, include shoot-outs. However, the program’s long-term appeal was partly due to the psychological drama and tough dilemmas dealt with moral ambiguity rather than a high-octane conflict.

The show broadcast 635 episodes between 1955 and 1975. The remnants of the set may be seen in Johnson Canyon, albeit they’ve deteriorated greatly over time.

The buildings are on private property, and getting too near to them is risky due to their state. You must gaze from the other side of the fence to see them.

Even as they rust and disintegrate, these old structures are fascinating to see. Though time is slowly eroding the Gunsmoke set, we are grateful that Utah played an important role in its history.

Chester Goode, Matt’s high-strung sidekick from Dodge City, appears in early episodes until season 9. He walks with a noticeable limp, which he attributes to a former military injury.

He does not wear a badge or carry a pistol, despite the fact that he is usually referred to as a deputy. His responsibilities technically include assisting around the jail, cleaning the office, running errands, and making coffee.

However, because he is brave and motivated, he is always prepared to assist Matt in apprehending criminals.

Watch for Quint Asper, a half-Comanche blacksmith and Festus’s good friend, played by a very young Burt Reynolds, among the town’s craftspeople throughout the first three years of the series.
