A few months after the Oscars, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is currently inviting 397 new members to join the ranks. Assuming all who have been invited to join the Academy finally say yes, the total number of members eligible to vote in the 95th Academy Awards, scheduled for March 2023, will be roughly 10,665.
Many singers, actors, industry experts, and executives have been invited to join the Academy in order to vote on the Oscar winners and nominees. They will have the right to join the organization. They include Billie Eilish, the Oscar-winning winner for best original song, Jamie Dornan from 50 Shades of Grey, Troy Kotsur, and Ariana DeBose.
Academy Invited About 397 New Members As The Oscar Voting Members
Currently, there are 44 percent women, 37 percent non-whites, and 50 percent non-Americans among those invited. The current list includes 54 countries from around the world.
According to the present list, if all of the invitees accept the offer, the Academy’s membership will be dominated by women, 34 percent. Non-whites account for 19% of the population, while non-citizens account for 23%.
Ongoing dedication to representation and professional qualifications, inclusiveness, and equity are all taken into consideration when selecting the members of the board. Only Academy Awards voting will be the responsibility of the members.
In addition to performers Jessie Buckley, Caitriona Balfe, Michael Greyeyes, and Jesse Plemons, as well as writers Zach Baylin and Adele Lim and musicians Finneas O’Connell, Leonard Maltin is one of the other invitees on the list.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on June 21 that singer Diane Warren, director Peter Weir, filmmaker Euzhan Palcy, and Back to the Future star Michael J. Fox will each receive an Oscar for their respective careers. The Academy’s Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award will be handed to all four during the Governors Awards, which are scheduled to take place on November 19.
An invitation to the academy does not ensure immediate participation in the organization. Those who have been invited must join more than one branch of nomination. After being invited to join this year’s academy, Hamaguchi decided to accept the offer and join the directing and writing groups. Invitations to the Academy are often followed by a request for invitees to join a branch before they can become full members.
For now, the invitees will be able to choose from nine different specialties within the film industry: directors, casting directors and actors; cinematographers; costume designers; producers; make-up artists/hairstylists; visual effects; and shorts and feature animation.
This year’s best original song award went to Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell for their James Bond theme ‘No Time To Die. On the list of invitees, these two and Anya Taylor-Joy, the star of ‘Last Night in Soho,’ are already included.
