What exactly happened to former Ugandan President Idi Amin? A 2022 update on his family
In 1971, General Idi Amin overthrew the democratically elected government of Milton Obote and declared himself President of Uganda. This marked the start of a gruesome eight-year regime that saw an estimated 300,000 civilians killed.
His expulsion of all Indian and Pakistani citizens in 1972, coupled with increasing military spending, contributed to the country’s prolonged economic decline.
Amin had to flee when exiled Tanzanian and Ugandan citizens took control of Kampala, the national capital, in 1979, ending his reign of terror.
He also lived out the rest of his days in Saudi Arabia without ever facing charges for his horrific deeds.

At King Faisal Specialty Hospital and Research Center in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Idi Amin suffered from kidney failure and was on the verge of death.
His fourth wife, Nalongo Madina, has begged Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni to allow him to spend the rest of his life in his country.
Museveni replied that Amin will have to “answer for his faults once brought back”.
Unfortunately, Amin’s family eventually decided to turn off the life support system and he died on August 16, 2003 at a hospital in Jeddah. He was quietly buried in Ruwais Cemetery in Jeddah.

Amin was the son of a Roman Catholic who converted to Islam in 1910 and was born in Koboko to a Kakwa father and a Lugbara mother.
Amin is said to have been the son of Andreas Nyabire (1889-1966), a member of the Kakwa ethnic group who adopted the name Amin Dada, according to a Makerere University researcher.
Similar to how he was abandoned by his father when he was little, he was raised in a rural farming hamlet in northwestern Uganda with his mother’s family.
Amin’s mother was Assa Aatte (1904–1970), a traditional herbalist who, among other things, treated individuals as Buganda nobles. She was of Lugbara ethnicity, so he had a mixture of Kakwa and Nubian ancestry.

In the end, it is impossible to determine the exact number of children of Amin, while the majority of sources indicate that he had between 30 and 45.
Even though Amin allowed up to 46 children in his will, his tenth son Jaffar Amin Remo claims there are actually 60 children. The majority of his descendants continue to reside abroad.
But according to Jaffar, his father was so devoted to his family because he loved them so much that he spent all his free time teaching them values and swimming.

Amin and Sarah’s son, Faisal Wangita, was born in 1981 and was convicted of participating in a homicide on August 3, 2007 in London.

Amin married at least six different women.
At least six wives were married to former President Amin, three of whom he divorced. His first and second wives, Malyamu and Kay, married in 1966. In 1967 he married Nora and then in 1972 he married Nalongo Madina.
On March 26, 1974, Amin officially proclaimed on Radio Uganda that he had parted ways with Malyamu, Nora and Kay because they supposedly threw a party without telling the selfish man.
A few months later, in April 1974, Malyamu was arrested in Tororo, near the Kenya-Uganda border, and charged with attempting to smuggle rolls of cloth into Kenya. Nora escaped capture and went to Zaire in 1979; her current whereabouts are unknown.
Nevertheless, in July 1975, in a £2 million wedding ceremony, Amin, a man who lived for pleasure, married Sarah Kyolaba, a go-go dancer with the Revolutionary Suicide Mechanized Regiment Band.
Additionally, according to Monitor, he reportedly married two other wives before passing away in 2003.
