She-Hulk director Kat Coiro has responded to those who criticize the titular character’s less bulky design.
Earlier this year, Marvel Studios released the first trailer for its upcoming Disney Plus series, She-Hulk: Lawyer. While the overall tone of the show was praised, there were two aspects that people took issue with. The first was that the visual effects looked very bad. The second was that the character had a body that was more athletic than bulky.
The director talks about the morphology
In the old days, She-Hulk director Kat Coiro addressed body type feelings. During the Television Critics Association’s press tour panel, the director again addressed the decision to make the character athletic rather than bulky:
“As for the criticized CGI, I think it has to do with our culture’s belief in its ownership of women’s bodies. I think a lot of the criticism comes from feeling that they are able to rip the CGI woman. We talk a lot about his morphology and we based ourselves on Olympian athletes and not on bodybuilders. But I think if we had gone the other way we would have faced the same criticism. I think it’s very hard to win when you’re making women’s bodies.
It should be noted that the question in question is completely separate from the quality of the CGI and the treatment of the visual effects artists. In fact, the cast and crew said they stand in solidarity with the people behind the effects. Whether or not changes are made to the industry, however, is another matter altogether.
Here is the synopsis of She-Hulk:
“She-Hulk: Attorney at Law” follows Jennifer Walters as she navigates the complicated life of a single thirty-something lawyer who also happens to be a 6-foot-7 green superpowered hulk.
Marvel Studios’ She-Hulk: Lawyer stars Tatiana Maslany, Mark Ruffalo, Tim Roth, Benedict Wong, Ginger Gonzaga, Josh Segarra, Jameela Jamil, Jon Bass and Renée Elise Goldsberry.
The series will premiere on Disney Plus on August 18. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the upcoming series and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
