squid game follows the story of hundreds of cash-strapped contestants invited to take part in a strange children’s game. Mechanisms must survive each stage, as failure to do so will result in immediate death.
The series premiered in 2021 and instantly soared to the top of Netflix’s charts, earning 1.65 billion hours of views in its first 28 days. The sequel was announced in June, and while the plot remains a mystery, it’s known that Lee Jung-jae, who plays protagonist Gi-hun, will be reprising the role.
Squid Game Creator reveals more details about the sequel
In his interview with Los Angeles Times, Hwang shared more details about the second season. He said he will follow Gi-hun on his quest to find the culprit behind this deadly game and prove that we are humans, capable of doing good.
“This is the biggest challenge of Season 2. It starts where we left off at the end of the first season. So the fact that I can’t wear that level of character arc is a huge challenge. Without giving any spoilers, there’s this line that Gi-hun says in the last episode: “I’m not a horse, and I’m curious who did this to us.” It’s going to be about this trip and Gi-hun proving that we really aren’t horses; we are all human. And the fact that we all care about goodness, the essence of humanity.”
Hwang also mentioned that Gi-hun might return to the game. Little is known about the new cast, though, along with Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-hun (The Front Man) and Gong Yoo (The Salesman) are confirmed to return. HoYeon Jung is also set to return in a new role, Kang Sae-byeok’s twin sister.
