She-Hulk: Lawyer is the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe creation, created and written by Jessica Gao with Kat Coiro leading the directing team. The black orphan Star Tatiana Maslany played the lead role of Jennifer Walters, a lawyer who specializes in cases involving superhumans. After blood cross-contamination with his cousin, Dr. Bruce Banner (played by Mark Ruffalo) becomes the 6-foot-7 superhero known as She-Hulk.
Besides Maslany and Ruffalo, the cast includes Jameela Jamil, Ginger Gonzaga, Benedict Wong and Tim Roth. The first full trailer, released on May 18, 2022, was criticized for its flimsy CGI, as many believed.

Did She-HulkDoes criticism open a Pandora’s box?
The series is set to release soon, despite the reviews. Even though the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been criticized before, this time it’s about VFX artists and the toxic work environment of the MCU. Many VFX artists have talked about working at Marvel Studios via Reddit threads. An anonymous artist, who had worked at Marvel, said:
“Working on Marvel projects ends up being incredibly stressful, and it’s a widely known problem in the visual effects industry, it’s not specific to any one visual effects house.”

She-Hulk criticized for bad CGI?
Marvel is infamous for its heavy use of CGI to design war scenes, destruction, and even an entire character. Some have commented that the “She-Hulk” looks more like Shrek than Hulk. The downloaded trailer has been compressed to reduce the file size, resulting in lower video quality. These same issues didn’t affect the Hulk trailer due to the details of his face.

The cast of She-Hulk defend the MCU or support the VFX artist?
Tatiana Maslany, along with Jessica Gao and Kat Coiro, released their statements amid controversy.
Tatiana Maslany: “I feel incredibly, like, respectful of the talent of these artists and how quickly they have to work, obviously, like a lot faster than they probably should be given, in terms of producing these things. I think we have to be very aware of the fact that the working conditions are not always optimal and that they have made such incredible progress in this industry. I watch it and it doesn’t look like a video game cutscene. I can see the character’s thoughts. I am very impressed with what they are doing.
J Gao: “It’s terrible that a lot of artists feel rushed and feel like the workload is too heavy. I mean, I think everyone on this panel stands in solidarity with all workers and is very supportive of good working conditions.
Cairo: “We are not behind the scenes of these long nights and days. If they feel pressure, we’re on their side and we listen to them. I think it has to do with our culture’s belief in their ownership of women’s bodies. We talk a lot about his morphology. We based it a lot on Olympian athletes, not bodybuilders, but I think if we had done the opposite we would have faced the same criticism. I think it’s very difficult to win when you make women’s bodies.
These statements in favor of VFX artists feel like damage control on the bad press regarding their CGI.
She-Hulk: Lawyer will be released on August 18, 2022.
