MCU’s Ms. Marvel Was Restricted Because Of Mr. Fantastic

There have been rumors that Marvel Studios significantly altered Kamala Khan’s power ahead of MCU’s Ms. Marvel release on Disney+. She no longer had flex abilities but could summon hard light constructs, much like Green Lantern.

According to popular belief, Reed Richards, aka Mr. Fantastic, inspired this change. Not to mention that their specific VFX power set is rather hard to take away. Producer Sana Amanat said she didn’t believe the members of the Fantastic Four had a role in the required adjustments, as they had a certain plot in mind and needed to make those changes.

Mr. Fantastic’s Arrival Didn’t Affect Ms. Marvel’s MCU Powers

In June, the conversation about whether or not Mr. Fantastic’s appearance would affect Ms. Marvel’s MCU powers began. According to Marvel’s Ms. Marvel executive producer and co-creator Sana Amanat, Doctor Strange’s appearance in the Multiverse of Madness didn’t give Kamala Khan her newfound cosmic abilities.

Kamala’s abilities may have been inspired by the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s long-awaited Mr. Fantastic, Amanat said in an interview with The Direct.

” Honestly, I do not know. I do not think so. I mean, from what I understood, it was kind of related to the type of story that we wanted to tell with Kamala, and not just as it relates to other MCU events, but also the sense of the story she has and her relationship with her family, linking the powers to her family’s past. I think that was really the greatest idea.

Ms. Marvel’s radical new abilities have already been touched on by Amanat. For some, the MCU’s new Kamala Khan ability to create crystalline constructs was a bummer because her comic book version had the same talent.

The backlash doesn’t matter.

For the first time, Disney+ revealed that Marvel’s First Family may have had a hand in turning mechanical constructs into lightweight constructs.

Nordin Rahhali, Ms. Marvel’s Visual Effects Supervisor, explained why Kamala Khan’s abilities have been changed in Marvel Studios’ next chapter: Assembled.

Ms. Marvel wasn’t meant to be a carbon copy of Mr. Fantastic or Elastigirl, according to Rahhali, who expressed excitement about creating a new superpower for the character:

“I think there was a conscious effort to make her not feel like Mr. Fantastic or Elastigirl. There were a few early concepts before I started that had this idea that she could manifest armor or parts of his body in that protective element. And so, I saw that as an opportunity. I mean, how often do you come into the MCU and create power from scratch, which is, to me the most exciting and fun thing you can do.

The VFX artist was asked to imagine what it would be like to look at the lighting effects and capture and harden them into the new visuals:

“So, you know, I love this idea that she was able to manipulate this energy from another source. You know Sana [Amanat] described it as, imagine it if you were like looking at a lens flare and you trap that, you harden a lens flare that you see with your eye or through optics. It was an interesting way to describe it. So I started building ways to make what she builds, that energy she can create or channel through herself, manifest in our dimension as objects.

Unusual visuals

It’s possible that altering his entire power set just to distinguish himself from another character is going too far. In a popular animated film at the time, a band of superheroes with the same powers were at the heart of the plot: Into the Spider-Verse: Spider-Man.

The question is, what will Marvel Studios do when Miles Morales is introduced? Will he transform into a new character with nothing to do with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man?

Even though the reasons for the adjustments are endlessly debated, at least Marvel fans haven’t received an inferior product. Despite some major tweaks, Ms. Marvel is one of the most popular shows on Disney+.

To better distinguish Kamala’s new abilities, Marvel gave them their own visual style, even though it looked suspiciously like those of a member of the X-Men. When Fantastic Four hits theaters in 2024, fans can only hope the studio can capture the superheroes’ stretched abilities to the fullest.
