59-year-old actress Cherie Gil has died. His talent manager Annabelle Rama shared the information on Facebook, writing:
Sid Lucero, Gil’s nephew, who also paid tribute to him, confirmed the story. On June 19, Gil posted a joint social media post with Renee Perrine in which she called Perrine her soulmate.
On August 5 at 5 a.m. at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan, New York, Cherie Gil died of cancer. She was grateful for the cancer center she was admitted to last month.
Cherie’s bald photo was published in the magazine and she claimed to have gotten rid of all clothes that bore remnants of herself.
Gil, who was born on May 12, 1963, gained notoriety as La Primera Contravida throughout her 50-year career in Filipino cinema. She is also known as Evangeline Rose Gil Eigenmann and has won numerous awards at events such as the 42nd Gawad Urian Awards, ASEAN International Film Awards and Madrid International Film Festival.
Gil made her acting debut at the age of nine and was usually cast as the actor’s friend’s daughter or another family member. Later, in 1978, she played the main character of Bubot na Bayabas, a poorly received film.
Film producer and entrepreneur Lily Monteverde revived it via Problem Child, and it had a passable performance at the box office. She continues to make appearances in films like Salawahan, Sugar Daddy, City After Dark and others. She has contributed to a number of other films including Beach House, Dancing Master, Girlfriend and others.
Gil rose to fame for her portrayal of a naïve World War II survivor in the cult film Oro, Plata, Mata. From 1979 to 1981 she co-hosted German Moreno in Germany. She played the main antagonist in Bituing Walang Ningning, and she is best known for her infamous line, “You’re nothing but a second-rate impersonator trying to copy hard!”
Along with several films, television programs and stage productions, Cherie has appeared in a number of television series and prime time shows. She made her acting debut in May Bukas Pa in 2000–2001 and then in Bituin in 2002–2003. Later, in 2006, she played Menang Medel in the adaptation of Gulong Ng Palad.
Gil was later cast in the 2010 comedy fantasy Grazilda and the 2011 comedy fantasy Magic Payalok. The latter only lasted one season before being chosen for Time of My Life, another show.
