‘Batgirl’ Star Ivory Aquino Responds To DCEU Film’s Cancellation

Actress Ivory Aquino has responded to Warner Bros.’ cancellation of the DCEU film. discovery, Bat girl.

Earlier this week, Warne Bros. Discovery has made the unprecedented decision to cancel the DCEU movie bat girl, a film that had already completed principal photography and was about to be finished in post-production. Directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, along with lead actress Leslie Grace have already made their responses to the cancellation, and now actress Ivory Aquino is making her response known.

On her official Instagram, Ivory Aquino shared some behind-the-scenes photos of bat girl, in which she expressed her gratitude for the experience, while celebrating how the film was an opportunity for underrepresented demographics to be represented on a DCEU film. This would have been significant, given that Aquino is a Filipino-American transgender actress:

In the canceled DCEU bat girl film, Ivory Aquino was supposed to play Alysia Yeoh, a character created by Gail Simone. In the comics, Alysia Yeoh is Barbara Gordon’s best friend and the first major transgender character in a mainstream comic book. The character was also involved in the first-ever transgender marriage in a comic book in issue 54 of Bat girl.

Along with non-binary artists Barry Allen/The Flash by Ezra Miller and Maxine Hunkel/Cyclone by Quintessa Swindell, Ivory Aquino would have been the latest transgender artist to join the DCEU. Although bat girl is now canceled by Warner Bros. Discovery, the company has expressed a desire to work with part of the creative team again. Perhaps if these characters were to be revisited, it could result in some members of the same creative team returning, but it could mean some major bridges would need to be fixed.

bat girl was to feature Leslie Grace as Barbara Gordon, along with JK Simmons as Commissioner Gordon, Brendan Fraser as Firefly, and Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne/Batman. Keaton is still set to reprise his role as his version of the Caped Crusader in the upcoming DCEU movie, The flash.
