The DCEU is dead, why won’t they let it die already?

The DCEU is dead. With all the recent news surrounding the DCEU and the cancellation of multiple properties by David Zaslav, including the completion bat girl, there are a lot of very bored DC fans out there right now. Not only for the loss of bat girl, but also with the total lack of direction that the DCEU seems to have. No one seems to know the overall goal, and nine years after its inception with Steel man, it’s clear that the producers and studio executives themselves don’t know either. I think it’s been a long time, but the DCEU is dead, why doesn’t it just let it die already?

Controversy after controversy

Sadly, a few days ago DC and comic book fans were greeted with the news that bat girl had been pulled from Warner Bros.’s mailing list, and since it was only for HBO Max in the first place, that meant we wouldn’t see it at all. Add to that that the filming in progress super girl was also canceled, it left a bad taste in the mouths of fans, and many wondered what the next cancellation would be?

David Zaslav has been on the warpath since the recent merger between Discovery and Warner Bros., with the cancellation of several Arrowverse shows, a few animated films including Scoob: the holiday haunt. With particular regard to the reasons for bat girl being cancelled, Zaslav said, “The goal is to develop the DC, the brand and the characters, but just as important, to protect the DC brand.”, making it sound like he didn’t think at all to the movie.

Add to that the current controversy over Ezra Miller and it’s very public mental health issues, or the constant upheaval of one of their Aquaman stars, it’s safe to say that the DCEU has more than its fair share of issues at the moment.

Failed plans

Originally announced in 2014, the flash went through incredibly turbulent development, repeatedly pushed back, different writers and different stories until it finally settled on the current iteration. It’s been leaked that the film was planned as a soft reboot of the DCEU, which would perhaps make it the vehicle for a more cohesive DCEU, removing Ben Affleck’s Batman from continuity and replacing him with Michael Keaton’s Batman. old and back. However, with the current crisis with their star, COVID and other situations, the film has been pushed back, and as such, if it manages to survive David Zaslav’s cull, it’s releasing later than expected with potentially a different ending in mind, a point supported by Affleck’s recent confirmation to appear in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Why bring Affleck back if he’s just going to be replaced by Keaton? The DCEU is dead, why not let it die already?

What is the endgame?

Zack Snyder’s Justice League

For comparison, after nine years Marvel’s MCU had started with Iron Man and was firmly in its final arc from building Infinity Saga to Infinity War and Endgame. Right now, the DCEU has had quite a few movies, more bad than good, introduced several superheroes, recast several superheroes, and doesn’t seem to have a plan for its own characters. The reason I think the Snyder Cut has gained so much popularity among fans is that with all its flaws, at least the plan Zack Snyder put together had a clear direction, when apparently nothing is in place for now. No endgame, no direction, and ultimately, nothing exciting.

I’m first and foremost a comic book fan, so like many of you, the current situation is boring and frustrating for me. They wasted Cavill and Affleck, tried the Justice League far too soon, and nine years after its inception left us all with no idea what they actually do in the long run. At this point they must know that the DCEU is dead, why wouldn’t they let it die already?
