On August 6, 2022, a new video depicting a Thanos vs. Avengers fight surfaced on YouTube. What’s different in this case, however, is that the fight depicted was the Battle of New York – the one Loki originally fought on behalf of the big bad. The morphed video was a masterpiece in many ways as it shapes Thanos’ malefic “Okay, I’ll do it myself” in a realistic scale and shows him decimating the Avengers fetus in the blink of an eye.

The Battle of New York: Avengers vs. Thanos, 2012
In the video that has already gone viral, the newly formed Avengers are seen in their wide-eyed stance trying and failing to subdue the Mad Titan. Hulk arrives for the first time as Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner delivers his classic dialogue “It’s my secret, Cap. I’m still angry” moments before being defeated in a brutal hand-to-hand combat against Thanos.

The villain then quickly proceeds to complete each of the Avengers in the 2012 timeline, including Iron Man and Thor, without breaking a sweat. Loki’s comedian “I must leave this planet” taken from Ragnarok is seamlessly weaved into the narrative to match the terror of seeing Thanos arrive and kill the Avengers. The fight then ends and the screen shifts to depict Tony Stark’s nightmarish vision of Avengers: Age of Ultron fully realized, as all of Earth’s Mightiest died at the feet of an impending Thanos. However, the montage turned out to be wrong since it was just one of the millions of timelines seen by Doctor Strange during his trance on Titan during Infinity War.

Even as grueling as the fight proves, fans went perfectly nuts with this hugely creative re-imagining of Thanos’ war against the saviors and protectors of Earth. For one thing, it depicts the villain’s true scale of strength without the added power of the stones. Fans of the original comics will truly appreciate the staggering scale of the Titan’s strength as well as the miniscule effort it took to defeat the best and the bravest.

The video encapsulates scenes, cuts and dialogue from the original The Avengers (2012) and Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) and perfectly juxtaposes those with Thanos’ fight sequence to that of Infinity War (2018) and End of Game (2019). However, the main reason the viral clip is getting the love it deserves is that it also shows how this could easily have been the reality of the MCU. Fortunately, for us and those living in the Marvel Universe, Doctor Strange had the foresight to predict the outcome and guide the Avengers, and primarily Iron Man, to it.
