What happened to Joe Turner?
Joe Turner was sentenced to 55 years in state prison by Judge Steven Whittington on Friday, March 20, 2022. On March 10, 2022, Turner pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, sexual assault, and burglary with assault.
The potential of the state seeking the death penalty was eliminated by his guilty plea. Turner was also classified as a sexual predator.
Cooper’s father discussed his feelings after the court ruling in an exclusive interview with Jax outside the Clay County Courthouse.
“I’m happy,” Jeff Cooper remarked. In any case, 55 years is a lifetime. Four years after his death, he told Action News Jax he still struggles to understand him. It’s just one of those things that happened and I have a hard time understanding it. In fact, it was probably the hardest thing for me to do.
Jordan was called by her father Jeff “the brightest star” and the “love of her life”. He was one of several members of Jordan’s family who stood up to speak when the attacker finished serving his sentence.
The murderer, Joe Turner, also spoke about the sentence. He apologized for his actions in front of Cooper’s family members.
He told Cooper’s father and brother, “Nothing I can say or do will ever bring Jordan back. “All I wanted was to apologize. Please express your regrets to Todd and Jeff. I apologize.
Update on the Jordan Cooper case and murder
The 25-year-old had the mental capacity of a young teenager, according to Jordan’s family. On November 26, 2017, her mother notified the Clay County Sheriff’s Office that she was missing. The neighborhood police department then launched a major search effort.
Two weeks later, detectives found Cooper dead and covered the attic insulation of a house. Near his body, his clothes and blankets were found, but not his underwear. They also discovered a used adhesive bandage.
According to the medical examiner, Cooper had injuries and scratches to his legs, neck and chest. Cooper died of asphyxiation, according to an autopsy, and a sexual assault toolkit was acquired.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement executed a search warrant and removed the briefs for inspection. The underwear’s DNA matched Cooper’s.
Turner’s DNA also matched samples from the adhesive bandage and sexual assault kit. Turner was jailed as a result of the test result.
