Recently the game of thrones and The Lord of the Rings celebrity Sean Bean has made headlines with his comments about on-set intimacy coordinators. According to him, the presence of an intimacy coordinator only complicates things and does not let the actors act naturally. This comment from her has drawn a lot of criticism over the past few days as various actresses and other industry figures have come forward in support of the intimacy coordinators. Joining this list now is the guardians of the galaxy director James Gunn who opened his mouth to this latest issue.

What did Sean Bean say about intimacy coordinators?
In a recent interview with The Times of London, Sean Bean spoke about the recent rise of intimacy coordinators in films. Intimacy coordinators are hired so the stars and crew don’t feel uncomfortable while filming an intimate scene. The importance of privacy coordinators mainly increased after the wake of the MeToo movement.

Sean Bean on Intimacy Coordinators said that they spoil the spontaneity of the scene which makes it look unnatural but more technical in his opinion:
“It would inhibit me more because it draws attention to things. Someone who says, “Do this, put your hands there, while you touch his thing… I think the natural behavior of lovers would be ruined by someone reducing it to a technical exercise”.
This statement from the Ned Stark actor has drawn widespread backlash as many celebrities have explained that they feel more comfortable under the supervision of a coordinator.

James Gunn and others respond to Sean Bean
The hugely popular James Gunn recently took to his Twitter account to make his voice heard on the importance of on-set intimacy coordinators. The Suicide Squad director said that of all the new positions in the industry, he is grateful to the Intimacy Coordinators:
Of all the newer positions in the film industry, the one I’m most grateful for is that of Intimacy Coordinators. If they do their job well – and everyone I’ve worked with has done it – they just make sure everyone is on the same page – the director and all the actors involved.

Besides James Gunn, many actresses and personalities even came out to counter Bean’s statement. Recently, his Snowpiercer co-star Lena Hall also spoke out about Sean Bean’s statement. While she said she feels comfortable with Sean Bean, she also added that intimacy coordinators are important:
“If I feel comfortable with my stage partner and the others in the room, I won’t need an intimacy coordinator. But if there’s a part of me that feels weird , coarse, overexposed, etc., I will dispute the need for the scene or want a (privacy coordinator).
She further added that these coordinators also help a lot if an actor has already had bad experiences while filming another movie:
“I think the intimacy coordinators are a welcome addition to the set and I think they could also help with the trauma experienced in other scenes. Sometimes you need them and sometimes you don’t, but every person, scene and experience is different.
After Lena Hall, even West Side Story actor Jameela Jamil tweeted that as a stunt he also needs a coordinator:
It should only be technical. It’s like a waterfall. Our job as actors is to make sure it doesn’t seem technical. Nobody wants an impromptu petting…

Another West Side Story actress, Rachel Zegler, also called out Sean Bean saying that a safe environment is most important in these cases and spontaneity is not enough to threaten that:
intimacy coordinators establish a safe environment for actors. I was extremely grateful for the one we had on WSS – they showed grace to a newcomer like me + educated those around me with years of experience.
spontaneity in intimate scenes can be dangerous. wake up. https://t.co/bpxT2DVU1R

So it is clear that the stars are not at all in agreement with the actor of Ned Stark but it will be interesting to see if he speaks more on this subject.
