Recipes from My Home Kitchen, her first book, became a New York Times bestseller. She has served as an inspiration to chefs around the world in many ways. She developed a taste for cooking as she began to lose her sight due to neuromyelitis optica spectrum illness at the age of 20.
Her dining experience was a bit different because of her visual impairment; as a result, every day was a whole new adventure for her. As a cook, she increasingly had to rely on her sense of smell, touch, and hearing in addition to her intuition.
She had the chance to try out for the show in 2012 while working on her master’s degree in creative writing at the University of Houston. She impressed the judges and won the show thanks to her legacy and the memories of her late mother.
She had completely lost her sight at the age of 28. This, however, did not stop her from pursuing her dream. following her success, she traveled the world, learned Braille and used a cane to help her.
