Born George Alexander Trebek on July 22, 1940 in Sudbury, Ontario; he is the son of George Edward Trebek and Lucille Lagace. Of Ukrainian and Franco-Ontarian descent, he became a naturalized American citizen in 1998. He attended high school in Sudbury and then enrolled at the University of Ottawa. He earned a degree in philosophy in 1961, but during his college years he became interested in broadcast news, and even before he finished college, Alex began his career at CBC.

Working with CBC during his college years, he was at one time or another announcer on every show, filling in for his regulars.

In March 2019, Alex was diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer; he went through treatment and recently suspended the show, due to the coronavirus as Alex is in a risk group.
Even before pancreatic cancer, Alex had experienced several health issues, including a few mild heart attacks and a subdural hematoma resulting from a fall.
He has supported several humanitarian organizations and movements, including a $100,000 donation to Hope of the Valley Rescue Mission, a homeless shelter in Los Angeles.
