Disney+ She-Hulk
Why were the She-Hulk writers shocked? An appearance by Charlie Cox’s Daredevil character has been rumored as production on the Marvel superhero series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law on Disney+ nears completion. Even Jessica Gao, creator and head writer of She-Hulk, was surprised by the news that Marvel would allow their “Daredevil” character to appear in the legal-drama-fantasy series.
In the years before Disney+ and the MCU’s TV debut, Daredevil was the most popular Marvel series on Netflix. The world of Defenders TV-MA was darker and further removed from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, ever since Marvel severed ties with Netflix/ABC, Daredevil’s absence has been keenly felt.
Cox’s Wilson Fisk/Kingpin and Vincent D’Onofrio both made their official MCU debuts in Spider-Man: No Way Home and Hawkeye, respectively, so it’s good to see Disney/Marvel Studios putting the talent they have acquired from netflix to good use. A Daredevil with a yellow outfit was announced to appear in She-Hulk ahead of their debuts in Echo and Daredevil: Born Again.
She-Hulk Writers Were “Shocked” To Use Daredevil
The teaser shown at San Diego Comic-Con revealed that Daredevil would be in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and even hinted at his signature yellow outfit, confirming long-running rumors. In a recent interview, Jessica Gao, showrunner of Marvel’s She-Hulk, explained how she and the writers thought Charlie Cox’s Daredevil would join the cast:
“Well, first of all, we were shocked that we could use it. Like, when we first heard it was on the table, I mean, we couldn’t believe it. We didn’t We kept thinking, ‘Okay, at some point, someone is going to say, ‘Just kidding’. “It’s a cruel joke, and you can’t have it.” And it just went on and on.
While Netflix’s Daredevil series has stayed true to the Frank Miller character’s era, previews for She-Hulk suggest a more light-hearted approach. Gao went on to say that Daredevil in the Marvel Studios show wouldn’t be as harsh and sinister:
“And Charlie is so wonderful. He’s so ready to do anything, and he’s such a wonderful actor and a wonderful human being. What was so fun about bringing him and Daredevil into our world is that people have already seen a Daredevil that’s very dramatic, a bit heavy, very dark, brooding. And it was so fun to be able to do – and we do with every character cameo in the MCU – is we take them from the environment that you know them in, which is a much more dramatic and action-oriented role , a lot more on the serious side, and we bring them into our world and they play in a She-Hulk tone. And they got to explore and we can see a lighter side of that character.
Crossing the R-rated barrier
Given that Matt Murdock and Jennifer Walters work in the legal field, it stands to reason that they would eventually cross paths after acting as Peter Parker/Spider-Man’s attorney. There has been talk of her appearing in She-Hulk, but the show’s humorous tone has cast those plans in doubt. Fans are skeptical about the viability of gritty characters like Jon Bernthal’s Daredevil and Punisher in the MCU. Whether you think it’s a good idea or not, having Cox appear in She-Hulk without the dark tone and attire of her main series directly addresses those concerns.
Cox’s dual performance as Daredevil and a lawyer helped enhance the original film’s crime and courtroom drama. His involvement with She-Hulk and its implications for Echo remain to be seen. But it’s safe to assume that Matt and Jennifer will work together inside and outside of court. Cox honed his character’s ambiguity, allowing him to be reliable regardless of She-Hulk’s mood. Despite the “shock” of Daredevil’s first non-cameo appearance in the MCU in a comedy, fans need not worry about the film.
The Marvel Studios team is known for regularly incorporating fan feedback and supporting its artists. In addition to having Cox, one of the most acclaimed actors in the industry, She-Hulk will be the first series in the franchise to break the barrier long before the R-rated Deadpool 3 indicates a riskier direction for the fearless man. .
