Salman Rushdie is married three times, the third time to his editor sister Elizabeth West, 53.
The 75-year-old was seriously injured after being stabbed in the neck as he spoke at a rally in New York state. His literary career was not without controversy; with his book The Satanic Verses, which some Muslims consider sacrilege, he frequently received death threats.
When they noticed a strange figure rushing towards the stage, the audience was surprised. He stabbed the author ten times in the face, neck and abdomen within a split second and then fled.
He had liver damage, severed nerves in one arm and was expected to lose an eye, but has since been taken off the ventilator.
Hadi Matar, 24, who attacked him, has not been charged with murder but is still handcuffed until authorities make a decision.

Despite all the rumors about his penchant for business, his second book, Midnight’s Children, won the Booker Prize in 1981, demonstrating unparalleled admiration for his artistic talent.
He received high honors, including being knighted, as well as highs of success and lows of death threats.
