His father, Bill Comrie was a former co-owner with his brothers of the furniture company The brick, which gave Mike a comfortable upbringing. His mother Theresa died of cancer in 1990 when Mike was just 10 years old.
He has an older sister Cathy and an older brother Paul, born to Bill and Theresa. His brother Paul also played ice hockey and is a recognized forward in the National Hockey League (NHL).
His father remarried and had two more children with his second wife, Eric and Ty, who are also two talented hockey players – Eric is a goalie and Ty plays center, as Mike did throughout his career.

Mike completed his high school education at Jasper Place High School in his hometown – in 1993, at the age of 13, Mike participated in the Tournoi international de hockey Pee-Wee de Québec. Career
Mike began his career as a professional ice hockey player when he signed a $10 million contract with the Edmonton Oilers in the 2000-2001 season.
