Lionsgate’s 2005 Monster Movie man-thing wasn’t exactly a very good investment. The notorious monster movie was one of many adaptations Marvel attempted to bring to life at the turn of the century through its joint venture deal with now-defunct studio Artisan Entertainment (which was eventually purchased by Lionsgate).
Honestly you can’t blame the crew behind man-thing for his inability to rack up numbers in theaters. The film received around $5 million in funding from Marvel, and it returned to theaters only $1.1 million, which is pretty sad. But it doesn’t end there, the film’s director, Brett Leonard, has given some new details about the terrible conditions on set, and it’s a super smelly story.

A very smelly accident, what was it?
man-thing is one of Marvel’s worst-funded films, and the mess created on set by the horror film crew bears that out. It’s been 17 years since the movie came out, and director Brett Leonard revealed when commenting on the movie with ComicBook.com that the piles of mud that were commissioned to create a realistic swamp weren’t exactly made of mud or dirt.

Hear it from Leonard himself-
“We had to constantly replace the mud to get enough mud in certain areas. And we had to build mud mounds, because it was mostly a water reservoir. It was like working in water, mud and weird mud all the time. Basically, although it wasn’t a real toxic swamp, like the other part we were doing, but it was the man-made swamp.
Well, that’s fine, but the details get nastier-
“It actually got a little toxic because one day for one of the upcoming scenes we had to create a bigger mound of mud and the Aussie team went and got bags of dirt like Fuller to build the mound of mud in. Turns out it was made of what they called, chicken shit, meaning chicken shit.
“They poured all this chicken shit into this giant tank and the whole tank became dangerous bacteria.”
It’s a film set you wouldn’t want to be on, even if it’s a Marvel-approved project.

In other news, She-Hulk is seemingly integral to whether or not the next Avengers movie will happen
One of Marvel’s biggest stars, Mark Ruffalo aka Mr. Bruce Banner, says a new Avengers movie is off the books if She-Hulk doesn’t play a part in it.
Marvel’s next TV series, She-Hulk: lawyer, stars Tatiana Maslany as She-Hulk, the female version of The Hulk. During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the two Hulks sat down to talk about the show, and in between the conversation, Ruffalo suggested that Maslany’s character will be part of the Avengers in the near future.
“Alright, you can have a year. No, she’s here now, there won’t be another Avengers without her.
Ruffalo may have ruffled some feathers and unofficially confirmed a new addition to the mighty team!
She-Hulk: Lawyer will be live and ready to stream on Disney+ starting August 18, 2022, with a total of nine episodes in the first season.
