Top 5 Anthology Horror Movies

When thinking of anthology horror movies, most people would prefer the V/H/S franchise and stop there, but believe me, there are so many more available for you to feast on. Here are the 5 best anthology horror movies, and yes, the V/H/S franchise is right there…

5. V/H/S deductible

Top 5 Horror Anthology Horror Movies

The first entry in this list of the 5 best anthology horror movies is a bit cheating, being a franchise, but if we could take the movies from the franchise and pick the best segments from each and lump them into one package, we would have arguably the best anthology movie full stop. Whether it’s the insanely creepy and sexual batwoman of the first, the go-pro zombie of the second, or the doctor Bioshock experimenting on his subjects, or the militia with vampires of the fourth. Just give me a great cut of the best and remove all the rest of the dregs, please.

4. Death of the Night (1945)

Top 5 Anthology Horror Movies

The oldest on this list by far, each of the segments is narrated by guests in a country house. Stories including the standard murder, ghosts, creepy ventriloquist dolls, and more are aided by their present-day age in their creepiness, which is only ever meant as a compliment. If you haven’t heard of it, as hard as it may be, try looking it up and watching it.

3. Asylum (1972)

Top 5 Anthology Horror Movies

Set in an asylum (it’s funny) during the tenure of a new doctor, we follow several stories told, as the doctor tries to figure out which of the patients he’s observing is the old administrator. While none of the segments stand out, it’s more of an indicator of how good each is, rather than a commentary on how poor they are, all of which are uniquely scary, unnerving, and in some cases horrific.

2. Trick’r’Treat (2007)

Top 5 Anthology Horror Movies

An anthology film that ties all of its various stories together in a nice little arc at the end, this film draws on its own ingenuity as well as well-used and well-known tropes. I’d recommend it to almost anyone, because not only is it downright a good horror movie, it offers strong performances from each of the stars in the segment, and it’s as much a celebration of our favorite holidays as it is a warning against.

1. Scary Show (1982)

Number one by far in this list of the 5 best anthology horror movies, most anthology movies tend to have different segments written and directed by different writers/directors, but Creepshow is one of the very few where each of the segments is the sole creation of famous horror extraordinaire George A. Romero. It gives the various segments a cohesive look and feel, and it’s hard to argue that this is one of the most beloved anthology horror films.

This is my pick of the top 5 anthology horror movies, but what did I miss?
