His father’s second marriage gave him two brothers and two half-siblings. After spending a year at the High School of Performing Arts, Owens graduated with honors from Yale University in 1983.

Career

One of Owens’ earliest performances was in a production of Peter Pan at Arcata High School, where he performed the lead role. Her inspiration to continue acting later in life came from that first performance.

As Elvin Tibideaux, the lover of Sondra Huxtable, Owens made his television debut in the 1985 second season of the NBC sitcom The Cosby Show. In 1987 Tibideaux married Sondra and was cast as a regular character. He remained on the show until its conclusion in 1992.

In the first episode of the sixth season of Elementary, he played a lawyer. In the FX comedy It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, he played himself. He makes an appearance at the Philadelphia Eagles open tryouts dressed as an actor impersonating Donovan McNabb while promoting McDonald’s in the Season 3 episode “The Gang Gets Invincible”, but the gang recognizes him as “the guy from The Cosby Show” who portrayed “Sondra’s husband… Alvin [sic]”. He portrays the same character in “Frank’s Pretty Woman”, a season 7 episode, although this time he impersonates Tiger Woods. Dee, on the other hand, refers to him as the man who posed as McNabb during Eagles tryouts after recognizing him. Then he says he’s not Tiger Woods, but he’s Don Cheadle, the actor. He makes a cameo as the same character in “The Gang Makes Lethal Weapon 7”, the second episode of Season 15, but is assigned the role of Roger Murtaugh in the gang’s film Lethal Weapon 7.

In the 2007 That’s So Raven episode “The Way We Were”, Owens appeared as Eddie’s father in a cameo role. Also on NBC in Las Vegas, he made an appearance in the season premiere.

He starred in the romantic comedy Play The Game in 2008 with Paul Campbell, Andy Griffith, Doris Roberts, Liz Sheridan, Marla Sokoloff and Juliette Jeffers.

He made an appearance as a court-appointed mediator in 2010’s The Secret Life of the American Teenager on ABC Family. Additionally, he played a researcher in “The Garden of Forking Paths” episode of the ABC television show FlashForward.

During the Shakespeare Theater Company’s Free-For-All performance of Julius Caesar in 2011, Owens played the role of Casca.

In the episode “Ritchie” of the 2015 NBC drama series The Slap, he played an obstetrician.

In the episode “Deceptive Little Parasite” of the 2017 FOX drama series Lucifer, he played an assistant dean.

The Daily Mail published footage of Owens working at a Trader Joe’s in 2018, which many people considered a “workplace disgrace”.

Owens agreed with the description of the “shameful job” and eventually left due to the negative attention. Producer Tyler Perry offered Owens a ten-episode role in The Haves and the Have Nots following the storyline. Additionally, Owens landed supporting roles in the films Fatale and Hide and Seek as well as a guest role in NCIS: New Orleans.

He played a police detective in the movie Impossible Monsters, which came out in 2020. Since I’m usually cast as a father, lawyer, doctor or teacher, playing a detective was really enjoyable for me, he said. In Power Book II: Ghost, he now has a supporting role.
