Black Panther Star Chadwick Boseman will posthumously receive a Disney Legend Award at Expo D23 2022.
Chadwick Boseman debuted as King T’Challa in Marvel Studios Captain America: Civil War in 2016. Although he was featured in a supporting role, he had a pretty big impact overall. This eventually led to his own standalone film, Black Panther in 2018, which became more than just an entry into the MCU, but a cultural landmark of a blockbuster that broke box office records, earned numerous Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, and the ‘turned into a cinematic icon.
On August 28, 2020, Chadwick Boseman died of complications from colon cancer, which he was diagnosed with as stage III in 2016, which inevitably progressed to stage IV some time before 2020. He kept his illness a secret for the public, with only a select few knowing about his health. Earlier this week, Expo D23 announced that among many new inductees to the 35th Anniversary Disney Legends Awards ceremony to be held on the first day of Expo on Friday, September 9, 2022, Chadwick Boseman will receive a posthumous honor. “Chadwick Boseman was driven by purpose and sought to achieve it through writing, directing, acting and activism. His breakout performance came playing Jackie Robinson in 42followed by his next role as James Brown in Climb. He then starred in the title role of Marshal, which followed a young Thurgood Marshall. Boseman joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as African superhero Black Panther in Captain America: Civil War before bringing the character to the forefront of his own solo film, Black Panther, which was critically acclaimed, broke world box office records and had a social and cultural impact felt globally. The film received seven Oscars® nominations, including Marvel’s first-ever Best Picture nomination. Boseman won the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture Award alongside the film’s ensemble. In 2019, Boseman starred in 21 bridges. In 2020 he appeared in Da 5 Bloods, directed by Oscar winner Spike Lee.
