Almost immediately after that, Barbara parted ways with the Family to be with another lady.

In the end, the authorities were able to track down Charles and the others, and Barbara’s testimony became an essential component of the investigation because it was so important. She was on the fence about whether or not to take the stand, so the Family offered to pay for her flight to Hawaii so that she could be there. There, Barbara stated that in order to prevent her from testifying, Ruth gave her a hamburger that was laced with ten LSD tabs. Manson and other Family members appear in Tarantino’s movie as a menacing presence looming over the beautifully recreated Los Angeles setting. Charles Manson: Who was he?

Charles Manson spent his early years moving between relatives and, later, in and out of Midwest institutions. He was born in 1934 to a teenage mother. He got married twice and had a son in his early 20s. When Manson was released from a California prison in 1967, he asked the warden if he might stay because he was thought to have been properly institutionalised by the authorities.

Manson had ties to several powerful and rich individuals in Los Angeles. Dennis Wilson introduced him to Terry Melcher, a record producer and the boyfriend of actress and model Candice Bergen. Terry Melcher is the son of Doris Day. The actress Angela Lansbury’s daughter was once a Family hanger-on who, despite not being a formal member, used her mother’s credit cards to purchase food and clothing for the Family.

Guinn suggests that the residence represented Manson’s rejection by the music industry. Manson had courted Melcher as a patron and even hosted the producer at Spahn Ranch, where Melcher politely listened to Manson and the Family perform. Tate would later rent the residence (located at 10050 Cielo Drive) with her husband, director Roman Polanski. Manson placed a lot of stock in his relationships with Wilson and Melcher, and it’s widely believed that once it became clear that neither man was going to significantly advance his musical career (although Wilson did persuade the Beach Boys to record a version of Manson’s song “Cease to Exist,” which they renamed “Never Learn Not to Love,” it was widely regarded as a failure), Manson turned more and more toward violence.

How did “Helter Skelter” work?

Prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi, in his exhaustive attempt to put together a motive for the Family’s killings, landed on Manson’s obsession with what he called ‘Helter Skelter.’ Helter Skelter, as used by Manson, was the impending race war that would result in thousands of deaths and force the Family to flee to underground caverns (Manson told his followers the White Album was additional proof his theories about the end of the world were correct). They would remain there until it was their turn to emerge and take control of what was left of the Earth.

While Manson initially predicted that African-Americans would commit the first crimes against whites, his dire situation in the summer of 1969—his musical ambitions had largely failed and his Hollywood connections had dried up—led him to change his mind and advise the Family that they might have to start Helter Skelter themselves, committing heinous crimes in affluent neighbourhoods in an effort to show African-Americans how the violence shone—led him to shift focus. In 1974, Bugliosi published Helter Skelter: The True Story of the Manson Murders, the first major work examining the Manson Family and the best-selling true crime book of all time.

Who were the victims of the Manson Family?

Tex Watson, Patricia Krenwinkel, Susan Atkins, and Linda Kasabian, who would eventually testify against the other members of the Manson Family, drove to Tate and Polanski’s house that evening on August 8, 1969. (the director was out of town working on a film). The eight-months-pregnant Tate, who starred in the 1967 film Valley of the Dolls and was regarded as one of Hollywood’s most promising up-and-comers, was unwinding at home with her friends, including celebrity hairstylist Jay Sebring, coffee heiress Abigail Folger, and Folger’s boyfriend Voytek Frykowski. None of them had any tangible connection to Manson or the Family other than being physically in the house previously occupied by someone Manson knew (Terry Melcher).

In Helter Skelter, Bugliosi writes that a witness for the prosecution described a March 1969 day on which Manson came to the house looking for Melcher and found Tate on the porch instead—“There could be no question that Charles Manson saw Sharon Tate, and she him,” writes Bugliosi.

Tate and her friends all died at the hands of Watson, Krenwinkel, and Atkins, as did Steven Parent, a teenaged friend of the house’s caretaker who happened to be pulling out of the driveway as the killers arrived.

The very next night, the same group of Family members, plus Leslie van Houten and Manson himself, set out to commit more murders. They took a car to Leno LaBianca and Rosemary LaBianca’s home in the Los Feliz neighbourhood of Los Angeles. The Manson Family had no idea who LaBianca was, though some of its members may have attended a party nearby. Bugliosi said that the LaBiancas were picked at random after spending several hours travelling through posh Los Angeles areas.
