Early life and family
Rhett was born on October 11, 1977 in Macon, Georgia, USA to parents Jim and Dianne McLaughlin. He lived the first years of his life in Macon, but in 1984 he moved with his family to Buies Creek, North Carolina.
While in first grade at Buies Creek Elementary School, Rhett met his lifelong friend and partner in mischief, Link. The two were inseparable and known to be very naughty. In fact, the name of their YouTube channel is derived from an incident in elementary school.
After scribbling profanity on their desks, Rhett and Link were taken into custody by their teacher, Mrs. Locklear, and given Mythical Beasts coloring pictures to complete.
The same title is used today to describe their tribe of fans on YouTube, all known as Mythical Beasts.
From an early age, they both showed a love for cinema and, at 14, co-wrote a screenplay that they never finished shooting. They were also part of a Christian-punk rock band called “The Wax Paper Dogz”.
Schooling
Rhett attended school and later college with his best friend Charles. Together they completed elementary school at Buies Creek Elementary and later were roommates while attending North Carolina State University.
Both studied engineering and graduated. Rhett graduated in 2000 with a Magna Cum Laude in Civil Engineering and Link in 2001 with a Summa Cum Laude in Industrial Engineering.

Rhett’s career as a YouTuber began in 2011 with the launch of his co-ownership channel.
The first talk show the duo hosted was launched on the 3rd January, and was cast at their studio in Fuquay-Verina, North Carolina. The show was titled “Good Morning Chia Lincoln”, derived from the Chia figurine of Abraham Lincoln which would be the centerpiece of the show.
Each show was usually based on a specific topic which mostly included personal experiences and their opinion on the matter. The show ended after the chia figurine died. They started a second show called “Commercial Kings”, which launched in June 2011 and ended in August of the same year.
Following this, the two comedians, Rhett and Link, moved to Los Angeles, California, where they began their third ongoing show, “Good Mythical Morning”, which launched on January 9, 2012.
The success has been dazzling since, with 16.4 million subscribers in April 2020. The show continues and now has more than 1,700 episodes. Following their initial success, the duo launched a fourth show airing immediately after “Good Mythical Morning”, titled “Good Mythical More”.
The two friends also launched a series of podcasts ahead of the launch of their fourth show – “Ear Biscuits”. It continued through 2019 and included several interviews with other YouTube personalities and many personal discussions. It was once ranked number 14 on iTunes’ Top Podcasts list and won the Shorty Award for Best Podcast in 2016.
They have launched several other channels which are each dedicated to the variety of shows hosted by Rhett and Link, including “This is Mythical”, “Mythical Kitchen”, and “The Mythical Show”. The pair have won multiple Streamy awards and in 2019 acquired the Smosh channel after Defy Media shut down.
They also dabbled in music and are best known for their epic rap battles involving historical figures. They have performed internationally and have released two albums to date – ‘Just Mail Us The Grammy’ and ‘Up To This Point’.
