The hardest choices in video games

Video games have long been a staple that will challenge even the most emotional movies and television, and over the past fifteen years or so, we’ve all had to make some very tough decisions. Some had us sitting around for minutes trying to decide what to do, and they’re bad enough, but the ones that give you game-altering decisions and only seconds to decide, those are the real hardest choices in games. video games.

Telltale’s The Walking Dead – Kill Kenny or Kill Jane

hardest decisions in video games
Kenny and Jane face off.

Telltale’s The Walking Dead is a series where all the gameplay is based on making decisions. Many are superfluous and don’t have much impact beyond the next few minutes, but some affect future episodes and the story as a whole. In season two, we reunite with Kenny, who we thought was long dead, and meet a lonely stranger named Jane.

Over the course of five episodes, we see Kenny’s mania worsen, and Jane seems like a more wired adult to our young Clementine. It all comes to a head at the end of the fifth episode when Kenny and Jane end up fighting, and you have to choose who to shoot and who to let live.

One of the toughest choices in video games, and certainly one of the toughest on the long list that Telltale’s The Walking Dead gifts, you never really know if you chose the right one or the wrong one.

Spec Ops: The Line – Use White Phosphorus

hardest decisions in video games
A field of white phosphorus… and civilians.

A game that changed our view of war and FPS, Special operations: the line is full of choices from the start, and you’re not necessarily always aware of the consequences until you’ve made the decision.

Whether it’s at the start of the story having to choose between a civilian and a soldier getting shot, or the decision he’s on the roster for, it’s not a flippant game you take at the light while playing. Towards the end, we players have the option to use White Phosphorus on some advancing enemies. Knowing the implications and what it will do to enemy combatants, this is presented as a choice for the player. Use it and make the battle a piece of cake, don’t and it won’t.

Unfortunately for those who chose to use it, after the battle you come down and go through the wounded and realize that those enemy combatants weren’t that at all, in fact they were innocent civilians including children and their mothers , now kissed in death forever.

Bioshock – Harvest the Little Sisters

hardest decisions in video games

Less of a choice, and more of a choice over the course of the game, while exploring Rapture in fantasy Bioshock, players will meet Big Daddy protecting their little sisters. Basically young girls who spend their days and nights wandering around Rapture looking for dead Splicers to harvest ADAM. Kill them and you will get stronger, leave them and you will be rewarded with the good ending.

Fallout 3 – Blow up Megaton

hardest decisions in video games
This player has chosen violence.

At the start of Fallout 3, you will come across a quaint little post-apocalyptic town named Megaton. First big “city” that you will come across during your travels, you will find everything you need to continue your journey in the desert. A surprising quest given by the owner of the nearby Tenpenny Tower gives you the option to either spare the town or, depending on their preference, blow it up by setting off the decommissioned nuke in the center of town and removing it, as well as its inhabitants, of the landscape. One of the hardest choices in video games and this one is right at the start… Not really smart to build a city around a nuke anyway…

Mass Effect – Save Ashley or Save Kaiden

hardest decisions in video games
Save Ashley…?

Another series with a heavy emphasis on choices and their consequences (and not just in this game, choices are about what’s next, so make sure before you do anything!), Mass Effect has its fair share of the most difficult in video games, and no doubt the ones you won’t do lightly. Towards the end of the game, you have a choice of who to save between Ashley or Kaiden, and depending on how you played, at this point you can choose between friends, or romantic lovers, or just two people you don’t know. don’t like. not like. It’s not an easy decision.

And more…

Games these days have improved from the old side-scrolling or top-down RPGs of our youth, to a point where the choices we make will affect the landscape of the game and, in some cases, leave us thinking long after we have turned the game off. There are hundreds of choices we could put in this list, some even within individual franchises, but these are some of the hardest choices in video games I’ve played, and they won’t be the last, I’m sure…
