Important Characters In House Of The Dragon Episode 1

The First episode of House of the Dragon introduced the various important characters of the series. Here is a quick overview of each of them.

1. Princess Rhaenyra

HOTD: Princess Rhaenyra the new heiress

Meet the heir to the Iron Throne, daughter of King Viserys, Princess of Dragonstone, Princess Rhaenyra. Rhaenyra is shown to be a fierce, fearless, and strong woman. She is a rider of dragons and rides Syrax. The princess is as powerful as she comes and wants to be on the battlefield instead of giving birth. However, her biggest grievance is that she was not the son her father always wanted. Her father’s neglect and contempt caused her to harbor feelings of inferiority and sadness, especially after losing her dear mother. She is shown to have a special relationship along with his uncle, Prince Daemon who we hope will be explored further in future episodes of House of the Dragon. She is also close friends with Alicent Hightower, daughter of Otto Hightower, Hand of the King.

2. Demon Prince

HOTD: Prince Daemon Targaryen

Prince Daemon, brother of King Viserys is power hungry and wants to sit on the Iron Throne. A ruthless and sadistic man, he annoys almost everyone. He quickly established himself as the big villain of the series. He is also the commander of the City Watch. With his 2,000 men he storms King’s Landing and publicly maims and kills criminals. This scene provides the first episode with a lot of unnecessary gore and violence. Nonetheless, it shows Daemon’s savagery and savagery. He breaks the rules, has no sense of responsibility and takes risks to the highest degree. However, there is one person he would give in to and that is his niece, Princess Rhaenyra.

3. King Viserys

HOTD: King Viserys

The kind and gentle King of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros is played by Paddy Considine. However, good people aren’t supposed to sit on the Iron Throne. He is driven by his desire to have an heir, a newborn son. This leads to him neglecting and neglecting his daughter, Princess Rhaenyra. This ultimately leads him to make a shocking and disastrous decision. He chooses to sacrifice his wife Aemma to save his son but ends up losing both. His relationship with his brother Daemon also worsens.

4. Otto High Tower

HOTD: Otto Hightower

Ser Otto, the Hand of the King is presented as a loyal and faithful man who looks after all the interests of the King. He is also shown to have a strong dislike or rather a passionate hatred for the King’s brother, Prince Daemon. In fact, it was thanks to information Ser Otto passed on to the King that Daemon was banished from King’s Landing and ordered to return to Runestone. However, he too has dubious intentions as he asks his daughter to go and comfort the king after his wife’s death and that too in his private chambers wearing one of her mother’s dresses.

5. Alicent Hightower

HOTD: Rhaenyra and Alicent

Otto Hightower’s daughter, Alicent, is a close friend of Princess Rhaenyra. She seems to be a calm and wise woman. From her very first scene, she refuses to ride dragons and chooses to enjoy them from afar. She worries for her friend Rhaenyra as they sit down to read the story in the shade of a tree. The conversation also gives us a slight insight into Alice’s awareness of royal politics and how she cares about position and power.

6. Lord Corlys Velaryon

Steve Toussaint as Lord Corlys Velaryon in the HBO prequel House of the Dragon

Lord of the Tides, the Sea Serpent, Lord Corlys Velaryon is the master of Driftmark and the head of House Velaryon. He is also the husband of Princess Rhaenys. In the council’s first meeting, we see a glimpse of his personality as he speaks out and his doubts. He is someone who is able to take things into his own hands and who clearly wanted to be in control to do things his own way. He often voices his support for Prince Daemon despite resistance from others. This becomes even clearer when he shows no empathy for King Viserys after the death of his wife and newborn son. He immediately recommends his wife as the next heir to the Iron Throne. He even went further by suggesting their sons, in case the patriarchy still bans Rhaenys.

7. Princess Rhaenys

Princess Rhaenys

Played by Eve Best, Princess Rhaenys Targaryen was the eldest descendant of King Jaehaerys and the cousin of King Viserys. She was a victim of the patriarchy as she was not allowed to inherit the Iron Throne despite being the king’s closest relative. She is understandably unhappy with the current leadership of King Viserys and has her sights set on the throne as well. In fact, she’s been dubbed the queen that never was.

House of the Dragon has also had smaller roles that we hope will grow larger over time, such as that of Ser Creston Cole and Craghas Drahar.
