In The sand man comics and the Netflix show, Sir Roderick Burgess is an occult leader who attempts to trap Death in a spell in order to gain his power and revive his dead son. Instead, Charles Dance’s character accidentally traps Dream who refuses to give him anything he wants, remaining silent throughout his captivity. Instead, Burgess is content with Morphius gear which brings wealth and prosperity to his cult.
In The sand man, Charles Dance’s Sir Roderick Burgess has a difficult relationship with his surviving son. Recently, Netflix revealed a deleted scene that further elaborates on this and the character’s apathy towards the suffering of those affected by Morphius’ imprisonment:
