A deleted scene from Netflix The sand man develops Charles Dance’s Sir Roderick Burgess relationship with his son.
Earlier this month The sand man premiered on Netflix to positive reviews and high ratings. Currently, it’s unknown if the series will get a second season, but fans have been thrilled with its comic book fidelity. One of the series’ earliest antagonists was Charles Dance’s Sir Roderick Burgess.
In The sand man comics and the Netflix show, Sir Roderick Burgess is an occult leader who attempts to trap Death in a spell in order to gain his power and revive his dead son. Instead, Charles Dance’s character accidentally traps Dream who refuses to give him anything he wants, remaining silent throughout his captivity. Instead, Burgess is content with Morphius gear which brings wealth and prosperity to his cult.
In The sand man, Charles Dance’s Sir Roderick Burgess has a difficult relationship with his surviving son. Recently, Netflix revealed a deleted scene that further elaborates on this and the character’s apathy towards the suffering of those affected by Morphius’ imprisonment:
Here is the synopsis from Netflix The sand man:
There is another world that awaits us all when we close our eyes and sleep – a place called the Dream, where The Sandman, Master of Dreams (Tom Sturridge), gives form to all our deepest fears and fantasies. But when Dream is unexpectedly captured and held prisoner for a century, his absence triggers a series of events that will forever change the worlds of Dream and Eve. To restore order, Dream must travel across different worlds and timelines to undo the mistakes he has made over his vast existence, revisiting old friends and foes and encountering new entities – both cosmic and human – along the way.
The Netflix series stars Tom Sturridge, Gwendoline Christie, Vivienne Acheampong, Boyd Holbrook, Charles Dance, Asim Chaudhry, Sanjeev Bhaskar, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Jenna Coleman, Joely Richardson, David Thewlis, Stephen Fry, Patton Oswalt and Mark Hamill.
