Early life and education
Rodriguez, the only and eldest son of Cuban parents, was born in Newark, New Jersey. His parents are Rawedia Mara Rodrguez and tank top Narciso Rodrguez Sanchez II. The Canary Islands are the birthplace of his paternal grandfather.
He graduated from modest St. Cecilias Catholic High School in Kearny, New Jersey in 1979.
He attended Parsons The New School for Design, The New School’s art and design school, while living in New York. Narciso’s parents opposed him entering the fashion industry.
Career
Rodriguez worked as a freelance designer in New York before becoming director of women’s design for the Anne Klein brand and later working for Calvin Klein. After leaving Anne Klein, Rodriguez worked for Calvin Klein. It was in 1996 that he designed the wedding dress of Carolyn Bessette, an employee of Calvin Klein, for her marriage to John F. Kennedy Jr. It was the first time that he had attracted special attention for his work. He created his own record label in 1997.
After the death of John F. Kennedy Jr., Rodriguez hired Stephanie Mikesell, who had previously worked as an editorial assistant at George magazine, to be his assistant.
