‘Thank God They Did That’: She-Hulk’s Jessica Gao Reveals She Fought Tooth And Nails With Kevin Feige To Delay Jennifer Walters’ Origin Story To Later Episodes, Fans Say it made no sense to keep such a generic story a mystery

Allowing the MCU to diversify its characters, we have seen many interesting films released in recent years including Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Black Widow, Ms. Marveland She-Hulk: Lawyer is its latest version.

She-Hulk, created by Jessica Gao and stars Tatiana Maslany as the main character. It also sees two famous characters return to the MCU, including Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk and Tim Roth. Abomination/Emile Blonskywhile also being the first MCU production to feature Daredevil.

The origin of She-Hulk supposed to be in episode 8?

Jessica Gao revealed that the first episodes won’t explore her origin, already starting fans off with the lawyer as She-Hulk. She said the origin was supposed to be in episode 4, and later moved the origin to episode 8 in production in an interview with Collider, she noted:

“Yeah, actually, it moved around quite a bit because when we first wrote it in the writers room, it was episode four…. And then it was during production that we decided to push it to episode eight. I remember there was a lot of talk. Honestly, I was probably in a runaway state.

A rather odd decision for a Marvel production as they like to stick with origin stories or follow-ups. Considering the public’s lack of familiarity with the character, and the Hulk’s last production being released 14 years ago, it seemed like a much riskier move.

After post-production of the first episode, Kevin Feige and many high-level Marvel Studios officials insisted on moving the origin to the first episode. Later, even test audiences felt the same way, feeling unfamiliar with the character and wanting to know more, she said:

“Kevin and everyone at Kevin’s level, wanted to get him moving[origin] in the first episode, and I fought them tooth and nail. But, I get it… the test audiences really wanted to know more about her. They had trouble. It was the elephant in the room, and they couldn’t get past it. So, I lost the argument.

She realized that her familiarity with the character was not the same as the rest of the people, having been a fan of the character in the comics for a long time. Jessica Gao is still happy with the answer but wished she could do it her own way.
