Youth and early career
At a young age, Haechan enjoyed dancing and listening to music, often dancing and singing in his spare time, performing in front of his family. He also took piano lessons, and eventually during his teenage years he discovered popular K-pop music, especially enjoying SHINee songs. He is the eldest of three children, and when their mother noticed his interest, she encouraged him to pursue a potential career in entertainment.
He appeared at an audition held by SM Entertainment, one of South Korea’s biggest entertainment companies; he passed and was signed to become one of their trainees.
As a result, he had to return to Seoul, as the family had already resided in Jeju for some time. For the next several years, he was mostly under the radar, training to hopefully get selected for one of SM’s future projects. He appeared briefly as part of SM Rookies, which featured many of the company’s future talents. At the time, he still went by the name Lee Dong-hyuk, although later he was named Haechan by Lee Soo-man, which means Full Sun.

Soo-man would also be responsible for recruiting Haechan into the next project – in 2016, it was announced that a new boy group would be created by SM.
This group would become NCT (Neo Culture Technology) and it marked the company’s first new group since Red Velvet’s debut two years prior, and was their first boy group since Exo in 2012. The group’s concept was to have an unlimited number of members, who are part of various sub-units that focus on different parts of the world. Eventually things settled down in 2019 as 21 members became more consistent and belong to different age groups.
He was part of NCT’s second unit called NCT 127, named after the longitude coordinates of Seoul, with seven group members including Mark, Winwin, Yuta, Jaehyun, Taeyong and Taeil.
Following their introduction, they released a debut EP NCT #127 and began performing regularly on TV shows. He was also selected to be part of NCT’s third group, NCT Dream, which also consists of Jaemin, Jisung, Chenie, Renjun, Jeno, and Mark.

In 2020, NCT 127 released singles to promote their second studio album – “Neo Zone” – which was released a few months later. A repackaged version of it was also released as “Neo Zone: The Final Round”.
He then worked with NCT Dream for their fourth EP “Reload,” with him and the other member promoting its release. Meanwhile, as some members neared graduation, NCT reverted to its concept of members leaving and graduating, opting instead to stick with its current lineups. One of his recent projects is to be part of live online concerts meant to entertain while most of the world is still under quarantine due to the coronavirus pandemic, including South Korea.
Private life
Haechan is single – relationships aren’t very common in the Korean entertainment industry due to their busy schedules, but if he has a relationship in the future, it would probably be with a girl who has good vocal ability. In his spare time, he enjoys playing football and dancing. He is also considered the mood maker and cleanest of the group.
