Netflix delivers a derisory adaptation of resident Evil

A poor and lukewarm take on the films of the same name from director Paul WS Anderson, Netflix resident Evil fails to deliver the same thrill that actor Milla Jovovich managed to bring to the screens. Adapted from the Capcom-owned Japanese video game franchise, the rights to the original action-horror films were acquired in January 1998, and the first film in the series was released in 2002. Spanning 14 years and 6 films , the films are treasured as an understated cult favorite.

However, the series which serves as a sequel to the films and launches its individual take on the story of the novel T-virus outbreak, was not received with the enthusiasm expected as its parent predecessor. Placed in the same timeline, the zombie apocalyptic action series received a paltry 55% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and fails to maintain a lasting impression on viewers.

Lance Reddick takes the floor to defend resident Evil

Actor Lance Reddick is described by review website Rotten Tomatoes as one who rose quickly through the ranks with a string of intense yet diverse characters in some of TV’s most respected series. And so, in a passable acting scrum, Reddick becomes the only standout in this latest Netflix project. His character also has added value as Wesker had already met his demise in the canonical timeline and returns as a clone in the current timeline.

However, with the series now being cancelled, the actor expresses his concern that the series is falling prey to racism stating, “Despite the haters and trolls, I want to give a special thank you to all the fans who watched the show.” Twitter, on the other hand, was firm in its opinion of the Netflix adaptation.

So far, reviews for the show have been lackluster since the Netflix adaptation failed to gain traction in the first place. With a limited viewership and already dwindling Netflix subscriber numbers, the streaming platform has increasingly focused on airing rom-coms and teen-focused dramas in its recent timeline. It is not surprising that resident Evil joins the side pile of many shows that failed to take off among audiences.
