Six of the best games shown at Gamescom 2022

Gamescom 2022 is coming to an end, and as such, now seems like the best time to review the deals it has given us. With an incredible amount of announcements, gameplay trailers, new products revealed, and more, it can be a lot for gamers, and naturally, that could mean some absolute gems will be missed.

Below are six of the best games we saw at Gamescom 2022, each with the potential to win its fair share of awards. Conversely, we only see what the devs want us to do at this point, so chances are they won’t be as polished as presented here.

Lies of P

gamescom 2022

With words we never thought we’d write, an upcoming Souls-like game based on Pinocchio’s story looks like one of Gamescom’s best games to be announced. Following a human/cyborg hybrid in our protagonist Pinocchio, the game seems to be centered around the quest to find and potentially fight Geppetto. It’s unclear how much of the famous story the game will adapt yet, but it looks great so far.

With echoes of both Bloodborne and Devil Mary Cry, fans of the genre seem to be in for a treat, with a heavy steampunk influence, magic, various weapons, and plenty of different enemies to fight.

Where the winds meet

gamescom 2022

Another hack-and-slash game featured at Gamescom 2022, Where the winds meet looks like the love child of Ghosts of Tsushima and Assassin’s Creed. An open-world RPG set towards the end of the Ten Kingdoms era in China, the game promises “freedom and authenticity”, and after watching the trailer below, it’s hard to dispute that promise.

In standard RPG fare, you’ll be able to take on several different tasks and take on missions from several different characters in almost any order, or if that’s not for you, just fight your way through the many NPCs shown to inhabit the world. Magic, swords, potions and more await you in what looks like a true-to-the-time mythological vision

dead island 2

gamescom 2022

Announced in 2014, dead island 2 is a surprising addition to this list, the general rule being that games with such problematic and unstable development end up being mediocre, especially after eight years.

Set a few months later dead island and Dead Island: Riptide Dead Island 2 takes place in multiple locations across California and seems pretty standard as far as first-person zombie games go. Swords, guns, molotovs and other standard are included, as are destructible and explosive objects in the environment. What stands out are the multiple different ways to take down zombies, the cast of characters you wouldn’t usually see in a post-apocalyptic world, and the world itself.

Here’s hoping the game is as good as the trailer below makes it look.

Raised on life

gamescom 2022

A game straight from the mind of Justin Roiland, creator, writer and voice-over artist responsible for rick and morty will always be full of wacky ideas and concepts. Raised on life delivers in that regard, with talking weapons with their own distinct personalities, a colorful and dynamic world, and a host of gross enemies guaranteed to make you laugh as you slay them.

A first person shooter with a difference, Raised on life looks like it will be a guaranteed hit with anyone who loves rick and mortyand for a wider audience that appreciates their guns gloating when they hit their targets, or begging to be fired like in the video below.

The Callisto Protocol

gamescom 2022

A spiritual successor to dead space trilogy developed by the same studio, The Callisto Protocol looks terrifying, intriguing and breathtaking all at the same time. Judging from the gameplay trailer below, the emphasis on stealth, melee, gun combat, and use of the environment as a whole will play into the survival tactics employed by the player. It feels satisfying to emulsify enemies in this giant meat grinder, and more so to dismember and paralyze enemies before they can attack.

Whether dead space is something to pass, the game will be quite terrifying in times when the combat is not thick and fast, and it will be a game with the lights on, a blanket around you and the remote in hand to turn the television off.

Speak

gamescom 2022

Another open-world RPG, Speak looks set to focus more on traversing terrain and the fluidity of combat, as much as the hard-hitting side of things. Stunning to watch, the game has been known for a while, but Gamescom 2022 gave us a proper look at the gameplay for the first time.

Transported from New York to a fantasy land called Athia, protagonist Frey must quickly learn the ways of her new world, with magic at her disposal and a huge world to explore, Speak seems like it will leave plenty of time for the player to explore and enjoy the world that has been created.

Honorable mentions

gamescom 2022

There were countless games showcased at Gamescom 2022, far more than could be done justice in a single article. The lords of the dead looks like another souls-like game coming to our consoles soon, and Moonbreaker looks like the Warhammeresque tabletop game we never thought we’d need.

Playstation took the opportunity to announce and show off its new controller, presumably an attempt to compete with Xbox’s Elite controller, and without announcing a game, the infamous Hideo Kojima announced a new podcast.
