A Broward Sheriff’s Office detective was arrested Thursday on suspicion of grand theft, official misconduct and fraud after it was discovered by investigators that he lied about his work hours to get more pay.
Detective Luis Silberberg has been on paid leave since February, according to authorities. As soon as criminal charges were announced, his status was changed to suspension without pay.
Silberberg “falsified overtime forms seven times, lied more than 50 times about working a full shift when records proved he hadn’t, and ultimately cheated BSO over $15,000 in compensation,” according to an investigation by BSO’s Public Corruption Unit.
When records showed he had been home for all or part of the shifts, Silberberg claimed 57 times to have worked all day, officials said.
