Recently revealed concept art of Avengers: Infinity War revealed a cut scene involving Don Cheadle’s War Machine early in the film.
Infinity War launched an extremely ambitious two-part crossover event for the MCU, which would end in Avengers: Endgame, calling all major MCU characters into the battle against Thanos. The latest piece of concept art to emerge from Infinity War reveals War Machine almost participated in one of the film’s first battles.
Following the events of Captain America: Civil War, Rhodey was unable to walk without the aid of a harness specially designed by Tony Stark, but he wasn’t going to let that keep him out of the fight. This concept art shows that he almost used another piece of Stark technology to help his fellow Avengers.
Concept art, shared by artist Phil Saunders on Instagram, shows Don Cheadle’s Rhodey in a “holographic control system”, piloting the War Machine armor remotely to help in the Battle of Edinburgh in the opening scenes of Avengers: Infinity War.
In the movie, this fight pits Corvus Glaive and Proxima Midnight against Wanda Maximoff, the Vision, Captain America, Black Widow and the Falcon. The heroes, on the run since the end of Civil war, then find Rhodey after the battle. Originally, however, it seems the plan was for Rhodey to get more involved.

The post also reveals that Bruce Banner would have piloted the Hulkbuster armor in this early version of the Edinburgh-based fight scene. Sadly, the scene didn’t make it past concept art, but the artwork does offer some insight into the War Machine footage we might have seen.

Everything the Avengers fought for led to this moment – the fate of Earth and existence itself has never been more uncertain.
