High school career
Miller was born in Dallas on March 26, 1989. He ran track and played high school football for the DeSoto Eagles while attending DeSoto High School in DeSoto, Texas. University career
Miller was educated at Texas A&M University and from 2007 to 2010 he was a member of the football team known as the Texas A&M Aggies. In 2007, he played defensive end for the first time and was honored as a Freshman All-Big 12 by The Sporting News. During that season, he recorded 22 tackles, 10 of which were single saves. He has a total of two sacks, four tackles for loss and a forced fumble in his stat line. He played in a defense that was 4-2-5. In his freshman year of college, he weighed 220 pounds.
Miller’s pattern of skipping class and not delivering during practice was discouraging for newly recruited head coach Mike Sherman in the spring of 2008. Miller was placed on indefinite administrative leave by Sherman’s decision. Miller was discouraged and came up with the idea of moving the schools; nevertheless, at his father’s request, he remained. After that, Miller took things more seriously.
Miller played weak side linebacker for Joe Kines’ 4–3 defense in 2008 while a sophomore. He appeared in all 12 games, recording 44 tackles, including 25 solo saves, and leading the team with 3.5 sacks. He also led the club in losing tackles with 3. He had 7.5 lost tackles, caused and recovered two turnovers and made two more lost tackles. Due to the fact that he was primarily responsible for pass coverage rather than pressuring the quarterback, he was unable to demonstrate his abilities in this area of the game. In 2009, when Miller was a junior, he transitioned to valet, which is a mix of defensive end and linebacker roles. This allowed him to use his dash ability.
