Ryan Norman was born on February 25, 1998 in Pretoria, South Africa. He is the son of Fatima Whitbread and Andrew Norman.
Ryan’s mother, Fatima Whitbread, says her son is the best thing that has happened in his life. The Olympian initially had conception problems and her biological clock was ticking. She had a terrible childhood, which also affected her fertility. At the same time, Whitbread has struggled with fibroid issues and numerous minor health issues during her playing career.
After several treatments, Whitbread accepted that she was unable to conceive naturally. Meanwhile, her husband, then 54, was also facing fertility issues. Thus, the couple opted for IVF treatment.
Fatima Whitbread got pregnant on the second attempt, but the pregnancy ended in miscarriage. She then started having panic attacks. After which, the Olympian took a few more steps to thicken her belly.
In June 1997, Whitbread became pregnant with Ryan, who was not due until March 1998. Finally, a month ahead of schedule, Whitbread achieved her dream of becoming a mother at the age of 37. Ryan Norman was born healthy weighing 4lb 9oz
The story of Fatima’s struggle during her pregnancy is covered in Survivor, which tells the inspirational story of the star javelin thrower.
