Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Star Winston Duke says Namor is a character that feels more real than Aquaman.
Earlier this summer, the first trailer for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever debuted at San Diego Comic-Con. Among other things, it gave us our first look at Marvel’s King of Atlantis, Namor the Submarine, and that he would act as some sort of antagonist in the upcoming movie. However, comparisons would inevitably be drawn to DC’s own King of Atlantis, Aquaman.
Jason Momoa made his live-action debut as Aquaman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice before resuming the role in Justice Leagueand his own solo film, Aquaman. A sequel is currently in development and should be released next year. Curiously, the two characters have a lot in common. They are both rulers of Atlantis, have at least one parent who is human while the other is of a water-based race, and were both created in the Golden Age of comics. However, Black Panther Star Winston Duke seems to think Namor is a character that feels a lot more real.
The comparisons begin!
In the Black Panther movies, Winston Duke plays M’Baku; T’Challa’s former rival has become an ally. Speaking to the LA Times, Duke compared Namor to Aquaman, stating that the Marvel character was the one that felt more real and grounded in reality:
“In our version, it feels much more real than fiction. Like the MCU, we grounded it in real cultural meaning and cultural traditions. You see the Latinx contingent that is present visually. Ryan Coogler’s creation in the Marvel cinematic landscape is a profound honor and connection to real things. So I think a lot of people are going to see themselves represented.
