After having held various positions in the field and within the staff, he became in 2010 the commander of the 1st battalion of the Irish Guards. He was sent to Helmand Province, Afghanistan, as the leader of a battle group as a lieutenant colonel. Later, he became Deputy Commander of the 1st Infantry Division (US) in 2014, Chief of Personnel Capabilities at Army Headquarters in September 2015, and Deputy Commander of Strategy and Information of the Combined Joint Task Force-Operation Inherent Resolve in 2018.
On November 15, 2019, he was appointed Major General in charge of the Household Division.
