New World Order Director Reveals The Title’s Meaning

Captain America: New World Order was announced by Marvel Studios at San Diego Comic-Con in July, and director Julius Onah recently revealed the meaning of the film’s title.

New world order had been rumored to be the title of Marvel’s fourth Captain America movie long before it was finally announced. In Marvel comics, the New World Order is a villainous organization led by the Red Skull. “New World Order” was also the title of the first episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldierthe series that saw Sam Wilson’s first appearance as Captain America.

Julius Onah, who should direct the fourth of the MCU Captain America movie, has now revealed what the movie’s subtitle means for Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson.

In a recent interview with IGN, Julius Onah revealed the reasoning behind the title Captain America: New World Orderalluding to the differences in the world Sam Wilson faces compared to the world Steve Rogers operated in.

The Marvel director revealed that Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson will face decisions and situations unlike anything audiences saw when Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers wore the Stars and Stripes. Onah also hinted at the massive implications of Sam’s decisions in the film.

Julius Onah said of the title New world order:

“What does that mean? The decisions he’s going to have to make and the situations he’s going to face are radically different from what Steve Rogers has had to face. And as a result of that, because he’s a leader, now, of this team, he has to make decisions that are going to have massive implications. So the world has changed around him and he’s a changed man, and I think that leads to a storytelling really exciting.

That resembles Captain America: New World OrderTim Blake Nelson’s title mostly refers to the changing state of the world, rather than the comic book’s sinister organization – although, of course, that could be a double meaning and Tim Blake Nelson’s leader could be ready to take Red Skull’s place as leader of the New World Order.

In the same interview, Julius Onah explained why Sam Wilson was the perfect man to take the shield from Steve Rogers and how he is a new man after the events of Avengers: Endgame:

“Well, look, he’s a different human being and coming from a different set of experiences. Back in [The Falcon and] The Winter Soldier, we’ve seen what it means for someone like him to take the shield. But it’s also a very different MCU. It’s a post-blip MCU. It’s a post-Thanos MCU. So the world has changed a lot too. And the role of a hero has changed.

Just how much of the changes to Sam Wilson’s world and Captain America will be revealed when New world order was released in 2024. It looks like Sam is going to be facing tougher decisions than his predecessor.

The next film will pick up with Anthony Mackie’s Captain America where the Disney Plus series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier leave behind. Here is the synopsis of the series:

After the events of “Avengers: Endgame,” Sam Wilson/Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) team up on a global adventure that tests their abilities and patience in Marvel Studios’ “The Falcon.” and The Winter Soldier.

Directed by Kari Skogland from scripts written by showrunner Malcolm Spellman and Derek Kolstad, the series stars Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Falcon, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier, Emily VanCamp as Sharon Carter, Daniel Brühl as Baron Helmut Zemo and Wyatt Russell as John Walker/US Agent.
