Lawyer at Law – She-Hulk: Episode 5 Recap and Review
The first part of She-Hulk Episode 5 is a recap of how she fished this guy out and made it look like it was her fault. Jen finds out that Titania is suing her for using the name “She-Hulk” after saying goodbye to the “cliché hot doctor”. Now, Titania is selling a new line of pricey skincare, beauty, and wellness products under that name. It’s also everywhere, since her brand sponsors podcasts and gets people talking about her in the news.
Jen comes to Titania and tells her to put everything away. And she doesn’t, of course. Jennifer thinks about taking him to court as she tries to figure out what to do.
Nikki goes to see a man named Alonzo who works as a Drip Broker. She goes to a Boba Cafe, where Nikki talks to a worker in Chinese. Even though he’s not Chinese, he takes the two to the back room and shows them fake Avengers stuff.
Jen talks about what’s going on with the She-Hulk brand while Nikki arranges a meeting with Alonzo to help him with his clothes. His boss is quick to point out that this is a problem that needs to be resolved quickly. Jen says she never thought about trademarking the name “She-Hulk” (I mean, she hated it to begin with, right? (Why not just choose a different name?)
Jen is told that she must file a countersuit and prove that she was using the name “She-Hulk” professionally before the trademark date and that Titania is making money from name recognition. She is also told to clean up and that she needs new clothes.
She-Hulk: Lawyer – Episode 5
Titania’s attorney makes some very good points in court, such as the fact that Jen’s interest in the She-Hulk name only became an issue when Titania started making money from it. They even have a video of her saying, “I won’t answer because that’s not my name.” Jen’s lawyer shows another video of her saying that’s her real name and she’s proud of it.
They take a break until Thursday, when the judge tells Jen she needs to show more times when she chose to use that name. She went on a few dates as She-Hulk instead of her real name, Jen Walters, when she used the catfish dating profile. Jennifer is horrified to realize that she will have to bring every man she has dated into the courtroom to prove her point.
The sexy doctor is back, and he says Jen isn’t his type, so he’ll never date her. The judge agrees with Jennifer, so she can continue to use the name “She-Hulk”, while Titania must stop doing business under that name. Jen turns out to be the victim, and her lawyer tells her she can “do better”. You deserve better.”
The two of them go out for a drink and talk about how bad men are. Jen goes back to Alonzo and ends up getting her costume. We don’t really see it, but at the end of the episode we get a quick glimpse of the new daredevil mask. It looks like Matt Murdoch is also one of Alonzo’s clients.
Episode review
Aside from Jen’s catfishing in the last episode, which showed just how twisted morals can be, She-Hulk Episode 5 is just…boring. The legal drama is poorly written, because I don’t think personality witnesses would be enough to stop legal documents that have already been filed and should have been approved anyway. I’m not a lawyer, so I can’t say for sure, but it sounds pretty easy, doesn’t it?
Again, there’s no comedy except for a joke about Shrek poking fun at how bad CGI can be at times, and Jen’s character doesn’t change at all. Jen gets a glimmer of hope in court when she finds out the doctor doesn’t want to date her because she’s not his type…before it’s quickly dismissed and Jen becomes herself again.
This show has been on the decline for a while, and it’s safe to say that most people are still watching to see what the writers are up to with Daredevil. Given what they did with “Wongers” and “Abomination,” I don’t have much hope that they’ll do his character justice.
We hope next week’s episode will be better, but so far this run has been pretty bad.
Episode 4:
Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk (Tatiana Maslany) was hired by Wong (Benedict Wong) in episode 4 of “She-Hulk: Lawyer” to take care of Donny Blaze, a former student of the mystic arts (Rhys Coiro) . Walters lost the case, however, as there were no laws prohibiting someone from doing real or fake magic. But Donny’s victory turned out to be a loss as he accidentally opened a portal to a dimension with little demonic monsters. So Donny had to ask Wong for help figuring out what to do. And because there were too many monsters, Wong had to stop Jennifer’s date with Arthur (Michel Curiel) and force her to fight them. Once done, Wong immediately returned it to Arthur. The next day, however, Titania (Jameela Jamil) sued Jennifer for calling herself She-Hulk, even though that name was already trademarked.
She-Hulk: Lawyer – Episode 5
Nikki and Pug have a date with superhero costume maker Alonzo
At the start of Episode 5, “Mean, Green, and Straight Versed into These Jeans”, Jennifer remarks that Titania is doing a lot of publicity to make sure the name “She-Hulk” is only associated with her. Cousin Ched (Nicholas Cirillo) even buys a bunch of Titania stuff, thinking it has something to do with Jennifer, and brings it home to sign. You know, so he can sell them and make money. But Jennifer tells him that they are not hers but those of Titania. Ched reminds her that she should have filed her own superhero name before Titania, as if she hadn’t thought about it a hundred times already. At this point, the title card changes from “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law” to “She-Hulk by Titania”, which is the only joke that’s still funny.
Jennifer and Nikki (Ginger Gonzaga) decide to send Titania a warning by going to her fan convention and telling her to stop selling fake She-Hulk merchandise under the brand name. Titania clearly says no. So, Jennifer tries to convince herself that she never wanted to be called the She-Hulk. So she doesn’t mind if other people use that name. But the way she angrily stomps on her stapler shows she’s upset about everything about her name. Nikki and Augustus ‘Pug’ Pugliese (Josh Segarra) visit a boba cafe, which turns out to be a front for Alonzo’s (Griffin Matthews) superhero costume business, while Jennifer takes care of his anger issues. But the front desk guy won’t let them in like that. Nikki and Pug can’t talk to Alonzo until they buy a bunch of fake Avengers. When Nikki says She-Hulk is an Avenger, Alonzo agrees to a 15 minute meeting.
Jennifer has an idea to win her lawsuit against Titania
Holden Holliway (Steve Coulter) tells Jennifer she needs to get Titania’s “She-Hulk” name back because that name is associated with the superhero division of GLK and H. Jennifer’s attorney is Mallory Book, played by Renee Elise Goldsberry. Book’s first question to Walters is the same one everyone else has asked: why didn’t she register her own pseudonym? Walters says Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange or Chris Hemsworth’s Thor never had to. So, it makes sense that she didn’t think about it. Book tells him those aren’t their superhero names. Here are their real names. She says they’re going to sue Titania saying that Jennifer was already using the name “She-Hulk” professionally before the trademark date. And Titania is only making money from the popularity of this name in the market. She also tells Jennifer that she should dress better to show her respect.
Mallory says all of these things on the first day of the hearing to show why Jennifer deserves to be called “She-Hulk.” Titania’s attorney says Jennifer has said in public that she doesn’t want to be tied to that name. Mallory responds by showing the clipping where Jennifer says it doesn’t matter if she likes her superhero name or not, because she has to live with it. The judge asks Mallory to show that Jennifer’s name has always been linked to “She-Hulk”. If she fails, she will have to side with Titania. When Jennifer and Nikki return to their office after a brief encounter with Alonzo about his superhero costumes, they discover that Todd (Jon Bass), the guy from one of Jennifer’s dates, is one of their biggest customers. Even though he looks as scary as ever, it gives Jennifer the idea to bring her dates in as witnesses because she dated them as She-Hulk.
