Marvel star Don Cheadle set to return to the MCU as James “Rhodey” Rhodes in Secret Invasion on Disney Plus, shed light on rumors that he is set to take up the mantle of Iron Man.
Following the death of Tony Stark from Robert Downey Jr. Avengers: Endgamesome fans are wondering if Tony’s close friend Rhodey could break out of War Machine armor and don an Iron Man suit, just like his comic book counterpart once did.
Don Cheadle’s Rhodey looks set to play a bigger role in the future of the MCU, appearing in both Secret Invasion and as a leader of Armor Warsso it’s understandable to see many fans expecting him to take on the role of the MCU’s most popular hero.
Speaking to Extra in an interview at D23 Expo, Don Cheadle addressed whether Rhodey could step into Tony Stark’s shoes and become the MCU’s new Iron Man.
Cheadle claimed to have heard no rumors of Rhodey taking over as Iron Man, saying, “This is the first I’ve heard of this so I guess there’s no comment.” When pressed further, he said he couldn’t see Rhodey taking over from Tony and attempting to take the Iron Man title.
Saying he thought “Rhodey is his own guy”, Don Cheadle said:
“I don’t know. I mean, I think Rhodey is his own guy. I don’t think anyone can really interfere with that…Tony Stark, Iron Man shoes. I think he did that too although anyone could do it. But I think we’re going to learn a lot more about what Rhodey wants, and who he is, and what his place will ultimately be in the MCU firmament. Honestly, I don’t know. not much more than you.
Given Robert Downey Jr.’s beloved turn as Iron Man, it’s understandable that Don Cheadle wouldn’t want to try and reclaim the title. Rhodey and Tony Stark have always worked a little differently, and while Rhodey has spent time as Iron Man in the comics, it looks like he’s going his own way as War Machine in the MCU.
