“Where were the emotions?” : Marvel visual effects supervisor reveals Taika Waititi refused to use Morgan Freeman character for eternity in Thor 4 to focus on emotional scene

Morgan Freeman as God is one of the most common Hollywood movie casts, and it always looks good whenever he plays the godlike role looking down from above. However, it seems that Thor: Love and Thunder missed having Freeman’s God in the movie, or someone similar.

Thor: Love and Thunder is a multi-million dollar blockbuster from Marvel, and also the fourth installment of the Thor films set in the MCU. This scene in particular, where Eternity appears, seemed to involve almost no dialogue from one of the most powerful beings in Marvel comics, hinting that Eternity might also be speechless for future appearances, but it could have been different. .

Eternity was supposed to speak in Thor: Love and Thunder

XXXXXXX-SPOILERS AHEAD-XXXXXXX

Eternity made an appearance in the MCU with Guardians of the Galaxy, though in the form of temple murals. But it was in the final Thor movie that we got to see the abstract entity make its big-screen debut in theaters.

Speaking of that scene in love and thunder, Gorr the God Butcher can be seen in the realm of Eternity using Thor’s Stormbreaker to complete his vision of all the gods disappearing.

In this particular scene, Eternity is simply sitting, without even a single word of dialogue coming out of the cosmic entity. However, that wasn’t always meant to be the case, according to Love and Thunder’s VFX supervisor Jake Morrison.

Speaking to ComicBookMovie’s Josh Wilding, Morrison revealed that they were indeed considering someone to play the role of Eternity-

“Well…we certainly went through a lot of different options to get there. But I think we’ve all felt that sometimes, you know, less really is more. And so, either you fully realize…and I was asking the filmmakers, ‘Are we going to cast someone for this? Will it end up being, you know, like Morgan Freeman playing God again? … Are we going to do it, because if so, I would like to know sooner, so I can go get scanners and things like that.

However, Morrison goes on to reveal that director Taika Waititi wanted the scene to be “the moment” for Thor, Jane Foster and Gorr and that talking about Eternity would only be a distraction.

“And they really felt that…I thought it was super smart…That Taika [Waititi] and the Marvel gang, that this moment really…belongs to all three actors. And if you suddenly jam another big CG creature in there that’s going to know how to throw a bunch of dialogue at you… that might distract from a heavy and emotional scene, frankly.

While it’s pretty clear no one is too bothered about not having Morgan Freeman or someone similar in Thor: Love and Thunderit would have been pretty neat to cast him as Eternity, or at least another actor of similar caliber.

Marvel gave freedom on how to represent eternity in Thor: Love and Thunder

It would be a monumental task to represent a character with a lot of power like Eternity in Thor: Love and Thunderwhile maintaining the idea that this is a character who does not like to talk.

Continuing the same interview with ComicBookMovie, Jake Morrison reveals how Marvel helped them portray a character shrouded in mystery.

Morrison went on to talk about Eternity and said that Marvel gave them the power to choose how they portray the character in film.

“And they gave us a lot of freedom in visual effects to do what I think was a pretty brave choice to go that easy… The great thing about working at Marvel is that they have the archives, so if you want to see…i literally received like a PDF like, “Oh and here’s every image in order of Marvel canon that Eternity has ever spoken to. When you have stuff like that. you’re like , like Sunday lunch reading all that stuff like on the iPad.

It has to involve a lot of brainstorming, and a character like Eternity needs a lot of thought and trial and error to make sure the aura of mystery doesn’t leave the character when moved to the bigger screens of comics.
