1998
He was ranked 702 and made his ATP debut in Gstaad. Federer was beaten in straight sets by Argentinian Lucas Arnold Ker.
2000
He reached his first ATP final in Marseille but was beaten by fellow countryman Marc Rosset. He also reached the final in his hometown of Basel but was beaten by Thomas Enqvist in five sets.
2001
While the highlight of the year was winning his first ATP title in Milan, the key moment of the year was beating Pete Sampras in the fourth round of Wimbledon on center court. The match lasted five sets. Sampras’ 31-game winning streak at the All England Club ended with this win.
2002
Roger won his first Masters tournament in Hamburg and later in Vienna, where he paid tribute to his former coach Peter Carter. He had died two months earlier following a car accident.
2003
He won the first Grand Slam title by defeating Andy Roddick in the semi-finals of Wimbledon and Mark Philippoussis in the championship match of this tournament. Roger ended the year having won 78 games in total.
2004
When he won the Australian Open earlier this year, he immediately jumped to No. 1 in the rankings and stayed there until February 2.
Rafael Nadal beat him in their first match, which took place in Miami.
Successfully defended his Wimbledon championship with a win over Roddick, then won his first US Open with a win over Lleyton Hewitt.
2005
Roger won 11 championships, including two Grand Slams (at Wimbledon and the US Open), to end the season as the world’s number one tennis player for the second consecutive year.
He was the first player to accomplish it since Don Budge in 1937-38, when he won both the US Open and Wimbledon in successive years.
2006
Roger ended the year as the number one player in the world for the third consecutive year, with a top 12 ATP championships under his belt. Those triumphs included three Grand Slam victories in Australia, Wimbledon and New York. He won four other Masters.
Additionally, he was the first player since Rod Laver in 1969 to reach the four-game Grand Slam final in the same year.

2007
Federer won eight championships during the season, including three Grand Slams at the Australian Open, Wimbledon and US Open, and finished the year ranked No. 1 for the fourth consecutive year.
Nadal’s 81-match winning streak on clay was cut short when he was beaten in the final in Hamburg, played on clay for the first time.
However, at Roland Garros, Roger suffered a loss to Nadal in straight sets for the second year in a row.
2008
Roger won the US Open for the fifth consecutive year, despite finishing second to Nadal in the Monte Carlo, Hamburg, Roland Garros and Wimbledon finals.
The Wimbledon match was an epic match that went 9-7 in the deciding set.
Federer won the men’s doubles event at the Beijing Olympics, along with Stan Wawrinka.
2009
Federer won his first-ever trophy at Roland Garros, making him the sixth man in history to complete a career sweep of all four Grand Slams. Then he won a 15th Grand Slam title at Wimbledon, when he won his sixth championship to complete a career Grand Slam.
A few months before the start of the clay-court season, he married Mirka Vavrinec in his hometown of Basel.
Although he was a five-time winner at the US Open, where Juan Martin del Potro beat him in the championship match, he became the first player to earn more than $50 million in prize money.
2010
Roger won his 16th major title at the Australian Open.
After holding the number one spot on the charts for 285 consecutive weeks, it fell to number two in June. The reigning champion’s run at Wimbledon ended in the quarter-finals after he was beaten by Tomas Berdych.
2011
After losing to Djokovic in the Australian Open semi-finals, he then beat the Serbian in the Roland Garros semi-finals, ending Djokovic’s 43-match unbeaten streak.
In the quarter-finals of Wimbledon, Roger was beaten by Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, and in the semi-finals of the US Open, he was beaten by Djokovic despite two match points.
2012
After beating Andy Murray to win his eighth Wimbledon title, Rafael Nadal broke the record set by Pete Sampras for most consecutive weeks spent at number one.
2013
Only one championship was held on grass in Halle, and the year ended with Roger ranked sixth in the world.
A humiliating loss to world No. 116 Sergiy Stakhovsky in the second round of the Wimbledon tournament followed a run to the Australian Open semi-finals and the last eight at Roland Garros.
A fourth-round loss at the U.S. Open has led to New York’s early departure for the past ten years.
2014
With a final score of 3-1 over France, Switzerland became the first country in its history to win the Davis Cup.
In the Australian Open semi-finals, he was beaten by Nadal. At Roland Garros Roger fell to Ernests Gulbis in the round of 16, and at Wimbledon he lost to Novak Djokovic in the league match in five sets.
2015
Roger has won six trophies, but all of his last matches against Djokovic – in Rome, Indian Wells, the US Open, Wimbledon and the World Tour final – have been defeats.
His victory in the Brisbane final marked the 1,000th victory of his career.
2016
The tennis star failed to win a championship for the first time since 2000, and the season was further hampered by left knee surgery in February, limiting him to just seven events. It was the first time Roger hadn’t won a title since 2000.
2017
At the Australian Open and Wimbledon, Roger won his 18th and 19th Grand Slam trophies respectively.
At 35, he won the Grand Slam tournament in Melbourne, becoming the second-oldest winner in Grand Slam history, behind only Ken Rosewall, who won the Australian Open in 1971 and 1972.
2018
At 36, Federer became world number one in February, making him the oldest player in the 45-year history of the rankings.
Victory over Marin Cilic in the Australian Open final extends his collection of Grand Slam championships to number 20. Despite a match point, he failed to progress past the quarter-finals at Wimbledon and was beaten by Kevin Anderson.
2019
Despite two title points, Roger was beaten by Djokovic in a thrilling five-set Wimbledon final.
It took one last tie-break to decide the winner of the longest final in the competition’s history, which was played just three minutes shy of five hours.
2020
Roger reached the 15th Australian Open semi-final when Djokovic beat him in their 50th meeting. Before this match, he had to save seven match chances to upset Tennys Sandgren in the previous round.
At the height of the Covid-19 outbreak, the season was called off and he subsequently underwent two knee surgeries.
2021
After meeting defeat in the third round of Roland-Garros, Roger withdrew from the tournament. Then, in the Wimbledon quarter-finals, he was eliminated by Pole Hubert Hurkacz. He withdrew from participation in the Tokyo Olympics.
